Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Somebody I've never met but in a way I know Comment: What becomes immediately apparent upon listening to these albums is that Mick Jones was so far ahead of the game during BAD's excellent run of 5 albums. His innovative use of samples, breakbeats, rock n' roll guitars and synths over the course of these releases is breathtaking and rather takes the shine off artists like Beck who, on reflection, aren't quite as groundbreaking as critics have had us believe. To the unitiated I would head for the following tracks spread across the boxset to prove my point: - E=MC2 (truly sublime Nic Roeg inspired stream of consciousness), The Globe, Sudden Impact, V Thirteen and Rush. What all of these tracks show is a creative and brave individual who seemed set on continually challenging his audience and staying one step ahead of the competition. A song such as Sudden Impact sounds so entrenched in 2008 that rather cheesily I'm tempted to paraphrase Joe Strummer (who incidentally does a sterling job at the controls on No. 10 Upping St) and say that ''The Future was written by Mick Jones in the mid-80's'' My only quibble is Don Letts can't sing for toffee but hey i'm digressing! Turn on, tune in and enjoy Big Audio Dynamite! Customer Rating: Summary: Great Value But.... Comment: They have been mastered so quietly, that you really need to crank up the volume on your stereo & secondly V-Thirteen & Hollywood Blvd from No 10 Upping St have been remixed, and they are inferior to the original versions. Apart from that though, this is wonderful value. B.A.D have been sadly neglected recently. Jones shows what a masterful writer he can be, and Strummer helps out with a few lyrics here & there. Upping St is probably their best album but This Is...contained some great singles with E=MC2 surely one of the finest songs of the 80s. Tighten Up Vol 88 is a touch lightweight but contains 2 absolutely killer songs in Applecart & the title track. Megatop Phoenix was too long, but still contained alot of essential stuff (Dragon Town, Around The Girl, Stalag 123, Baby Don't Apologise) - The Globe brought in house & techno beats into the equation, and should of been an excellent final chapter for B.A.D. Customer Rating: Summary: Bargain box set with all you need to know about sound of the B.A.D. Comment: I am fairly new to the entire sound of B.A.D (I bought the limited 'Super hits' in 1998) coming from a Strummer appreciating background, I bought "Number 10, Upping Street" initially as a kind of 'alternative' end to the Clash (co produced Strummer/Jones, instead of Cut the Crap on which Bernie Rhodes killed any Clash credibility left without Jones) but loved it so much (Badrock City, anyone?) I just had to know the whole picture. I was not disappointed! From the 1st Album to the last, the Globe, there are some really good songs throughout. My favourite is probably Megatop Phoenix, with its fun samples and great diverse pop tunes. Not forgetting the brilliantly produced singles from the 1st album, but to balance it out at the other end, the low point of the box set is the last few tracks of The Globe, with some crummy early synth orchestra sounds. Mick... just no! What a total bargain this box set is. I am still desperate to get my hands on "The Lost Treasures of BAD I&II" remix album, I really hope they re-release that as well. I am 24, but at my wit's end with the poor music scene of 2008 so turn to some of the gems of years past, such as these albums! More Reviews
