Summary:
The complete studio works with Richie Furay
Comment:
Coming from Buffalo Springfield Richie Furay and Jim Messina were no beginners in 1969. Messina had some ambition to take part in the production and the resulting first two albums sound pretty fresh and clear for their age. Picking up the Pieces shows the widest range of styles in the 5-pack and the eponymous 2nd album brings a rather experimental and long instrumental track that is still very enjoyable. On the omitted live album Deliverin' the country rock focus became clearer. From the Inside is a very consistent quality effort at that and Crazy Eyes is even better. Both are clearly par with the Eagles' debut. The Poco rendition of JJ Cale's Magnolia is to die for. To my ears the sound of Good Feelin' to Know is a bit muffled and I'll have to listen a bit more to appreciate the quality of the songs. With the box of five you have at least three 5-star budget albums worth of classic Poco. The packaging is bare bones and there is no indication what kind of remastering may have been applied. I also own an edition of Crazy Eyes combined with Deliverin' on one disc, which is the latest remaster, and the Crazy Eyes from this box sounds no better or worse.

Worth waiting almost forty years for!
Comment:
Just brilliant! My vinyl copies, including the second copy of 'Poco', are worn and have remained unplayed for some years. 'The Forgotten Trail' double CD set has been a firm favourite for a few years - and if you can still find it is worth it for the few outtakes. However, this boxed set is worth it for 'side 2' of 'Poco' alone. The unexpected bonus track on 'Pickin up the pieces' (an early cut of 'Do you feel it too') is a treat also. After Jim Messina left, their direction changed and became less adventurous, however the quality of the last three studio albums in this set still stands the test of time - and in my view easily eclipses the Eagles offerings. Saw them at their first UK gig at the Rainbow in Feb 1972 - the encore of "Nobody's Fool/El Tonto De Nadie Regresa" was one of the most memorable concert experiences of the last 40 years. Only complaint I'd have would be that they should have made it six and included th third album - 'Deliverin' - also. Guess I'll just have to track that down and buy it anyway!

Where It All Began for the Eagles etc
Comment:
5 Poco albums for under £12, it's such a bargain anyone not familiar with these records would presume they are of a poor standard. They are not, these records show Poco at the forefrunt of the 'country rock' field. Whilst the Eagles took all the money, three records here Crazy Eyes, From The Inside & Good Feeling to Know are timeless - buy this box set.
