Summary: The first and the best
Comment: I have all the Euphoria albums and this is the one that I always come back to - it lives in my car now and I love it when I'm on the motorway - jack up the volume and sweet... def the best. Full of classic dance floor fillers - and mixed sublimely, superbly and sure. Buy it whilst you can because this is one worth having in your collection.

Summary: A mix with character
Comment: So, the first CD in the Euphoria collection, which now spans over 40 albums and the whole gamut of trance/hard dance sub-genres. Back in 1999, this album was to me, my friends and no doubt many others something of a revelation. It seemed like the first "big" compilation album to really cement what trance was, both in sound and in spirit - right down to the stories told within the liner notes.

But how does it fare now, 8 years on? For those of us who grew up listening to this album on repeat, it has lost none of its magic. Listening with a critical ear, however, reveals the flaws in the mixing that we glossed over at the time - even the first mix drifts in and out of time, and there are a few other near trainwrecks (what were the PF Project's credentials to mix this album? "Choose Life"?!)

There's a few slightly odd track selections too ("Repeated Love" in between BBE and BT - really?). But in this day and age of endless computer mixed "trance classics" albums, these flaws are what gives this album its soul. It's refreshing to hear the DJ trying something different, even if it does sound a bit odd dropping random kick drums from the next track into breakdowns. It's nice to hear the slightly more obscure tracks on here which still haven't been played to death ("Walk With Me", "Set in Stone", "Body Shine").

Tracks like "Flaming June", "El Nino", "1998" and "Love Stimulation" will never lose their magic, but hearing them in this context rather than some Gatecrasher/MoS cash-in CD really makes them seem special. This album is like a time capsule - it captures the moment perfectly, when trance ruled the clubs and took hold of the lives of a whole generation. It has so much character to it, so much raw energy, that for any newcomer to the trance scene to miss out on it would be a tragedy.

For me, trance has lost a lot of its appeal since then, and there are tens of compilations from back in the day that just sound cheesy in 2007, but this is the one I'll always come back to. Buy it now if you don't already own it, it really is something special (and it is only £6 :))

Summary: Definitive example of an era - an all time classic!
Comment: Never quite the same is it? When you dig out that old dance mix CD from EIGHT years ago! I never did bother buying it at the time, instead I borrowed it from a mate and taped all my favourites. After time these tracks became anthems and now its 2006. A few years older and a bit more cash in my sky rocket I decided to track down this first ever release from the Euphoria collection in an attempted to re-kindle that nostalgic youthful feeling.

Listening to this double CD now is a little like a slice of Dave Peace, Radio 1 on a Sunday evening. A few tracks do tend to grate a little but you generally come to expect that on a mix CD especially of this age. This however does not make the whole CD one to steer clear of. Infact a couple of bad/mundane tracks is about the only bad thing I have to say about this mix.

Two good points to think about when considering to buy this little gem.

(1) It is mixed by a REAL person, back in the day when it was manual - all hands on deck stuff. None of this DJ laptop business, allowing a large percentage of a computer processor to mesh tracks together. No this CD is a lot less seamless, which in my opinion makes listening a whole lot more enjoyable. You get to hear those favourites just cutting in and out, a flip of the cross fader a scratch of the vinyl. This is real mixing in my opinion, a little tease of the next track to come, keeps me bouncing off the walls with excitement!

(2) The second biggest point to remember is not the track listing itself (as a couple of tracks do let this mix down slightly) BUT instead it is the choice of remix on those timeless classics. A big favourite of mine has to be the Moody mix of Faithless - Insomnia. As overplayed as this track has been through the years I have only ever heard this remix on this Euphoric CD and I love it!

Im not going to do an individual track breakdown - what is the point? I am sure a huge percentage of you could hum each track as you look at the track-listing, so you know how they go.

You should buy this as a definitive example of an era. Hardcore dance fan or not this CD will demonstrate a time when dance music was at its peak. It comes highly recommended from myself as I am coming to the end of CD2 now and I know it wont be long until I want to listen again. It is a classic of example that has stood the test of time and I am sure this eight year old will bring furthermore listening pleasure for years to come.

Keep the spirit of dance alive! Enjoy!
