Editorial Reviews: Amsterdam is the prolific, accomplished Bristol DJ/Way out West producer Nick Warren's fourth mix set for the Global Underground series. The 18th release in this highly successful series, Warren's Amsterdam set is even more progressive than his fantastic Prague, Brazil and Budapest offerings. CD 1 dispels any fears that he may descend into the formulaic by providing deep, dark dance-floor mayhem with various peaks, occasional vocals, precise percussion and tweaked synth waves. It begins softly with the minimal beats and tribal bass of Weekend World Present's "The World" and Ariane's slo-mo ambient "Eternity" before moving into incessant dance groove territory with Soul Mekanik's "I'll Call U" and his very own band's chugging vocal cut, "Intensify". Thereafter, Warren really lets fly with a mid-section that takes in the dirty funk of "Riddem Control" and the gorgeous chords and stuttering percussion of Fluke's hands-in-the-air anthem "Bullet (Cannonball)". CD 2 is ruggedly constructed, no-nonsense big-speaker trance that applies the "I'm Losing Control" hypnosis technique to everything. DJ Gogo's "Ajuna" begins with classic trance elements, a monster bass line and slowly building peaks before taking on a mashed up life of its own. Resistance is futile as he really begins to work your stereo with Futureshock's "Sparc", Nick Hook's majestic trance epic "Enhanced" and Revolt's "Dive Into The Deep". Then he reveals the ace in his pack with the blissed-out atmospherics and driving beat of Halo Vargas' "Future", a reverent, resonant and gloriously funky sweatbash. Amsterdam reveals true dance-floor knowledge with the minimal of fuss. For Warren, simplicity is the key, quality the result. --Felix 'Obi' Zuze

Summary: The Fat Lads deliver once more....
Comment: I will make one thing clear straight away: This Global Underground outing is one of the best yet. Nick Warren hits you right from the start with an unrelenting groove that takes no prisoners and does not stop until CD2 has finished playing.

Nick's mix stays well clear of 'trance with a capital T'. If the trance you like is of the mainstream chart type then stay well clear. This music is for grown-up's only.

Basically, Nick Warren's mix is close to a more progressive Danny Tenaglia style set than anything else - very deep and very funky. I find it comparable to Sasha's first Global Underground offering: he didn't compromise the music and laid down exactly what he would play in a club. That CD won a lot of acclaim and I believe this should too.

It is a refreshing antidote to the cheesy trance vibe that is predominant in dance music at the moment.

So, buy this CD, turn it up LOUD and enjoy!

Summary: Another tasty mix comp.
Comment: I think this is definitely one of Nick Warrens best mix comps in the global underground series. He takes this one in a different direction to his others so far but does it really well and the mix grows on you after a few listens. I don't think it's the best in the global underground series (check out 'Dave Seaman - Cape Town' for the best at the moment) but it's right up there.

Summary: Deep and Groovy
Comment: this cd starts off nice and deep, the tracks merge graciously with each other, with layers and soundscapes that belong from outer space. The cd manages to remain lively and dance worthy without opting for the common method of putting every commercial dance tune into one dull mix. In a nutshell BUY THIS CD it is among the best global undergrounds to date, and it is likely to sound just as fresh next year as it does today.

Summary: The meister just gets better
Comment: You know before you press play that you are about to listen one of the best, if not the best, trance/dance albums of the year.

Nick Warren has a natural born skill to take the music effortlessly from track to track, making the album a journey instead of the run-of-the-mill mix albums. The inclusion of its own work (Way out west, with Jody) simply completes an excellent album that shouldn't be missed.
