Editorial Reviews: One of the more high profile and successful chillout compilations of 2001, The Classic Chillout Album is a double-disc affair with all the right hits in all the right places. The big guns are here on disc one with Kinobe's "Slip Into Something...", Groove Armada's "At the River" and Jakatta's "American Dream" to name but a few. Disc two is a bit more new-age with Deep Forest's "Sweet Lullaby", "Sadness" by Enigma and "Silence" by Delerium but there are some genuinely beautiful pieces from the likes of Morricone ("Chi Mai") and Robin Young-Smith ("Flower Duet") which sit more than comfortably with their downbeat dance cousins. --Georgina Collins
Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Comment: Ok, I don't like all the tracks but who has ever loved all the tracks on a CD? This is a great album with the right mix of tracks all relaxing in their own way. Beautiful! Customer Rating: Summary: its not THAT bad! Comment: Ignore all the muppets who tear this compilation to pieces. Just because all those adverts and holiday shows cant come up with their own original background music, it doesn't mean the songs are terriable. If you like all those songs that aren't on this cd, then go buy a cd with them on instead! The oldest song is from 1976 (a little more than 5 years ago) and the compilation includes songs up until recently. Just because its entitled "The Classic Chillout Album", that does not mean it is a classical CD. It just contains classic (not classical) peices of music from a modern chillout genre. Its only got 4 stars because of the way the songs of different tempos and dynamics appear to be all muddled up, but its not that terriable. Quite interesting really. Better than most compilation CD's which start off slow and finnish with fast dance music. I also wish the full original of Chicane's Saltwater (9minutes) was included, instead of just fading out the song half way through, and Barber's Adagio For Strings might as well have been Barbers original, as William Orbits version on this cd isn't much different. You should buy this if you like relaxing modern music. Customer Rating: Summary: Good Music, Crap CD Comment: Whoever mixed this compilation should be shot. Agreeing entirely with some of the other reviews here, there are some nice tracks on these CDs but most simply don't go together, and frankly the mixing between some of the tracks is terrible. The second CD, depite having some nice tracks on, comes across overall as dull and uninspiring, whilst the first is just a mish-mash of styles and poor cross fades. This could have been a good CD for the collection, it sounded good on paper, but the execution leaves something to be desired. A disappointment. Customer Rating: Summary: Not what I expected Comment: 90% of the time, when you've returned from a rather stressful day at work, you need to wind down. A collection of reworked classical and new age sounds promising, but this collection simply fails to deliver. You get the impression that the compilers are culling only from the latest big names as opposed to anything remotely effective. More worthy inclusions would have been lesser-known titles such as "Monastery of La Rabida" by Vangelis, "Always Returning" by Brian Eno or the soaring guitar of "Summit Day" by Mike Oldfield. Even as a J.M. Jarre fan, I honestly think the inclusion of "Oxygene 2" was misplaced - get a copy of his album "Waiting for Cousteau" and skip straight to track 4. You'll be so relaxed, you won't move for an hour! In summary, it sounded promising on paper or in advertisements but I felt the selection was insufficient to be properly classified as 'chillout'. Customer Rating: Summary: ZZZZZZZZZZZZ.... Comment: ...oh, sorry, just nodded off there! The problem when something is a success is that the idea gets raped to death. This isn't too bad a chillout CD (I like the inclusion of Everything But The Girl and Clannad) but the problem is that with chucking in loads of TV ad songs this CD just copies all the other Chillout albums. And that's a shame, cos this potentially could have been a good compilation album. Including the likes of Kinobe, William Orbit and Moby is TOO obvious. I get the impression that most people who buy this are 30-something balding polo-shirted gimps with a nice company car and experiencing a midlife crisis. I would have liked to have seen more originality on this album. 'Adagio' - Barber's original, NOT William Orbit's cover - is a beautiful song, but thanks to him these types of songs are used on EVERY TV ad when they should have just been left alone. Where was Pachelbel's 'Canon', Debussy's 'Clair de Lune', Mascagni's 'Intermezzo'. Putting in film themes (but not REALLY obvious stuff like The Godfather or something like that) could have improved this CD vastly. I just wish record labels would take a risk every now and then, rather than just churning out the same old crap on every compilation album. More Reviews
