Editorial Reviews:
As another year of clubbing comes to an end and we look on to new years '05, Ministry of Sound document a snapshot of '04 with their latest annual instillation The Annual 2005 . The MOS Annuals have become more pop-centric since 2000 and this album is no exception. Thankfully, they appear to have walked the right side of the tightrope between crowd-pleasers and radio wish-wash this time around.Once again, this is a three disk box set release spanning 61 tracks. The cherry on top is that the third disk is a DVD showing some fantastic video clips. The first CD, the better of the two, includes some great tunes from the year gone by. Spankox's "To the Club" really represents and should have been the opening track. Another fantastic remix from Timo Maas, Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" is another highlight. The second disk tends to be a little watery and unfortunately includes the truly dire reworking of "Sweet Child of Mine". Kontakt's remix of "Sweet Dreams" has a little more soul to it. And Khia's decidedly cleaner version of "My Neck, My Back (Lick It)" is a great edition.
The same old gripes can still be had on this Annual. There are a few tunes that are plain annoying and the track placement hasn't been thought about carefully enough. Also, there are moments of mixing that are just downright poor. On the whole though this is a good addition to the collection. Yes, it's like listening to Dave Pearce on Radio 1 but if you know that before you buy then you shouldn't be disappointed. --Jarrod Rendle

Customer Rating: Summary: Musical carnageComment: Yet another installment in MoS' quite frankly offensive series of 'The Annual'. To be brutally honest I don't know where to begin the slating. 61 of the most vapid "now!" kiddie-bop-along-heard-it-all-before tracks you could ever come across. If you own a radio or have ever had the joy of listening to one you will have heard about 97% of the songs on this album. As a snapshot of 2004 it is lacklustre. As a bona-fied MoS compilation it is simply dire. They havent learned from the same mistakes they have been making since 2002. Yawn.Customer Rating: Summary: Outstanding Second discComment: Dance music can truely be like most things in life, the more you listen to it, the better it gets. I generally prefer the disc 2's of the annuals, Mainly because you get less commericial pop on it? And this time disc 2 was truely extraordinary. I must have listened to tracks 1 nearly right through to 20 on average 50 times each. Suitable for walking, in the car, or even relaxing, I enjoyed it everywhere. Favourites being Track 4, track 12, and the super-hardcore sounding track 8. (I know them by track numbers becuase I have em on my MP3 player as that.) :)Seriously, I'd advise on the quality of track 2 alone, that if you have a passion for less-commerical trance/dance music. This is worth the money. The third disc is an interesting addition!
Customer Rating: Summary: The end of an era presented yet againComment: After The Annual 2003, I thought things couldnt possibly get worse for MoS. It wasnt too bad, but was unbeliveably cheesy and commercial. The Annual 2004 was slightly better, but included an unnecssecary disc with worn out classics. And now, The Annual 2005 takes a new approach in a certain way.. by trying to increase commercialism with an extra 'dvd' - pointless if you think hard enough... but a new generation of kids actually like it.
Now that commercialism has firmly set itself in, songs like Call On Me were always going to be here, and although its an alright song, its on just about every dance album released this year. However, there are some good tunes - Put 'em High is good to work too, and theres a few others, but alot of tunes make up space. Bizzarely, "Strings Of Life" is over 10 years old, but MoS decided to include it, Pump it Up is just plainly annoying - something little kids or young teens find good, and the remix of the perfect Depeche Mode song "enjoy the silence" is just horrible, why try and change something thats not broken?
Cd2 is actually alot better, but doesnt by any means make the album worthy of purchasing immediately. "Do you know" was a big hit, and its good to hear it here, unfortunately though its been edited rather dissapoitningly, so that the main rhythm of the song is right at the end - the radio edit would have been better. Loveshy is actually a great song, and, if i'm pushing it, a bit more like classic MoS. Of course yet again, the rest is commercial, but better than cd 1. Everday 2005 is another example of what classic MoS used to be like - Everyday was actually on The Annual Millenium Edition, but that was the better original version with lyrics. Stranded in paradise is quite a good song too, a nice change to the cheese you endure from the other tracks. And finally, Attention! would be another good song to add to the list. Someday and The way you make me feel are quite feel good tunes, but again very commercial and sound as though they belong at a kids party.
Is the dvd worth reviewing? Apparently its got classic videos, of course including yet again Call On Me. Deepest Blue is the best song on the dvd, but the video is average. Love me right is another great song, and nice video. Heaven just had to be here to really 'complete' the commercialism of the dvd, and 'the way' too..
So, was 2004 a good annual for MoS? It could have been. With some desecent tracks like Everday and Stranded in paradise, it sounds good... but when this isnt continued throught the album, its dissapointing. As my title suggests, the true clubbers annual is over for classic MoS fans, and it probably was actually a few years ago. So it would seem commerciality, fancy adverts, and dvds can only keep MoS rolling in the money now, and the times of leather style book cases, true non cheese club songs for teens and adults alike, and superb mixing are gone. Shame really..Customer Rating: Summary: Not all bad!Comment: Well quite a mix bag of reviews, seems either love or hate it ranging from 1 or 5 stars. So I thought I'd review as well, to be honest it is 50/50 with good and bad tracks, same as a lot of compilation cd's but that still means around 20 decent tracks!!....and the DVD is worth a star on it's own, including call on me , somebody to love! Best tracks are...call on me, put 'em high, mymymy, drop the pressure, girls, calinda, dreaming 2004,silence,operation blade. So a mixed bag depends what sort of club/dance music you like really!
Customer Rating: Summary: Coffee mats!!Comment: I have bought many MOS annuals over the years and this is a poor effort. Given it many listens to see if it grows on me but no, sorry. Maybe it was just because of all the crap tunes last year!! DVD is great though from a visual point of view!!!
