Comment:
I was disappointed by the first Afterhours cd, yet somehow I have ended up owning three of the four GU releases so far, and this is the best of the lot.
Imagine: you and your pals have had a great night out, and, still on a (natural) high, you get back to your place.
Everyone's still in the mood for fun, so you stick on disc one, and soon, your guests are up and dancing. This is party music, with a good mixture of vocal tracks and (some pretty funky) instrumentals, with the set only mellowing out towards the end.
Now it's getting late, the lights have been dimmed, and your guests are either crashed out on the sofa, or sitting huddled in small groups, deep in quiet conversation. Luckily, you've put on disc two. The music on disc two is darker, moodier, more purely 'electronic'. It's not music to 'space out' to (the beats are just too insistent), it demands your attention, but it is great if you want something to focus your mind on as you stare up at the ceiling.
Well, now it's really late, and your guests have all gone home. So you stick on disc three. Although I think disc two is the best mixed of the three, I think that disc three is the best mix, and one of the best downtempo mixes I have ever heard. It's simply beautiful, and I actually find much of it extremely moving. Again, it's almost purely electronic, but with much more emphasis on melody, and perfect for listening to, as you slowly drift off to sleep.
