The perfect chill album?
Comment:
Quite possibly my friends, quite possibly.
Firstly, let me make this clear - this isn't just a collection of tunes. This is a crafted compilation with real care chosen to ensure that the tracks flow together and that the music as a whole is smooth as can be.
It contains 2 CDs, the first one being blissful chillout music, the second one being more uptempo. The thing that strikes me about both CDs however is how unique they sound. They're really rich in texture and both have a distinct 'feel' to them.
CD1 - The blissful chillout album.
Sure, it would be easy enough to compile another cafe del mar look a like but that's not what Ben's done here - instead the mix really flows together while remaining a collection of tunes, each of which is strong enough to listen to individually. There's no fillers here. From the opening beauty of Tom Middleton to the fantastic Fragile State this CD constantly made me sit up and listen. I found myself thinking this is really great music. Sure, it's all chilled out to be almost horizontal but it's also great tunes! I've gone on to check out a lot of the individual tracks after buying this.
CD2 - the more upbeat chillout album
So once CD1 had finished I was half expecting just 'more of the same' for disc 2 but that's not the case! Oh no! CD2 changes pace completely and while a lot of the sounds are the same (more Fragile State for example) the whole tone of the second CD has changed from one of supreme bliss to something more textured. There's more beats, more energy and while the tempo is still firmly relaxed you can't help but feel more invigorated by the second album as it infuses you with the heady scent of chillout.
In short - two CDs of great music where each track is a stand alone great tune for the price of one album. Where can you go wrong?

Fantastic and beautiful.
The majority of chillout compilations these days tend to be focused on 'ibiza' or on 'cafe del mar' or some other kind of 'label' or they're just bad. This, on the other hand, is something else. Mixed by Ben Mynott (formerly of Fragile State - oh how I miss fragile state, but I digress) this is essential listening for anyone who is interested in fine relaxing tunes. For once it's not a chillout compilation which you just put on in the background - it's a real ALBUM (shock horror). In fact, it's almost like TWO ALBUMS since it's a double CD and it's full of quality.
Ben Mynott obviously mixes the whole thing nicely but more importantly he has selected the tracks carefully so that the listening experience is smooth yet varied, taking you across a myriad of different styles.
My personal favourite tracks include:
Urban Myth Club - Breathe
Amanaska - Sleep
Leo Abrahams - Spider (jon hopkins mix)
Amba - Yearning
For any bigchillers this is a must - it plays like a who's who of chillout right now, featuring tracks by known artists but less well known tracks (such as the Jon Hopkins remix).
Don't think of this as chillout - think of it as just good music.
