Summary: The Definitive Crime/Detective Thriller - Stylish and Dramatic
Comment: Yet another Michael Mann classic, 'Heat' has everything the thriller fan needs to be properly
entertained.

The story is plausible and insightful, the cast and acting is excellent
and the production values are silky smooth.

The plot is essentially a
detection/chase-drama about a highly-motivated police detective, and his team, who are trying to
catch all the members of an efficient criminal gang who carry out high-value robberies.
/>The film covers the story from both viewpoints and (unusually) delves deep into the personal lives
of all those involved, to provide a multi-layered plot; this also helps to explain why the film is
quite long...

Robert De Niro is the highlight of the actors on show as far as I'm
concerned; just marvel at his facial movements as he considers his predicament whilst he drives to
his 'new out'.

The film has all the familiar Mann traits, including stylish
cinematography, believable violence and an excellent musical soundtrack.

This was the
first film that Mann used musical contributions from Lisa Gerrard (used again later in 'The
Insider'); along with the other tracks (eg Moby) it all makes for a pulsating and very atmospheric
musical soundtrack.

This 2-disc DVD edition has a good picture quality (but as it has
not been restored a number of 'sparkly' artifacts appear every now and then), good sound
reproduction (but it is occasionally a bit muffled) and worthwhile extras.

Summary: The best crime movie ever?
Comment: Theres not much I can add to what has already been said. However if by some miracle you've missed
this film over the last 12 years then here is a quick overview of one of the best crime movies ever
made.

Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro star as respectively dedicated cop and master
criminal. Pacino as Cop Vincent Hanna is so dedicated that he neglects his family and his 3rd
marraige is falling apart. DeNiro as Neil McCauley is a man who is prepared to walk away from any
relationship in order to maintain his criminal lifestyle. A previous reviewer gave the acting
honours to Pacino, which I'd have to disagree with. Lets be clear here both are excellent, and I
like both actors, they are amongst the best ever. But for my money DeNiro steals it in perhaps his
last great performance. Pacino just overplays his part just a little bit, which allows me to give it
to DeNiro - but only just.

The remainder of the cast are excellent and Michael Mann
directs with his usual skill. Some of the action sequences in this film are brilliantly done. I
recently saw Mission Impossible III, which has some impressive action sequences in it but they
aren't in the same league as the ones in this film. Why? Because Heat does not rely on CGI effects
and the camerawork is vastly superior. Furthermore action sequences do not need to contain
explosions every 30 seconds to make them work!

The icing on the cake is the extras
disc, which is pretty good with a section on the famous meeting between DeNiro and Pacino, and a
making of featurette as well.

This is quite a long film at 164mins but you will find
that it passes very quickly - always the sign of a good film. I've seen this two disc edition very
cheap recently so whilst its an essential purchase its worth shopping around for it.

Summary: ACTION WITH A CAPITAL A
Comment: Brilliant fast paced thriller with plenty of action and a great cast.

The story follows
a group of extremely well organised and well armed bank raiders led by Robert Deniro, with Tom
Sizemore and Val Kilmer in tow. The gang are hunted relentlessly by Al Pacino and ends in one of the
best shoot outs i have seen on film.

Summary: Must See
Comment: This film is miles better than the usual crime thrillers and probably one of the best films ever
made. Amazing set pieces, great acting and subplots that would make a decent enough film on their
own, couple that with Michael Manns brilliant vision and your in for a treat. Pacino is manic,
De-Niro is ice-cold and the supporting cast of Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd and Jon Voight
get better characters to play than most lead roles. I saw this film at the cinema and remember
thinking I had watched something truly great.
