Summary: Excelllent Stuff.
Comment: As an avid fan of Morse I had my doubts about this series - I was wrong. It is an excellent series
in it's own right. Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox are excellent and well paired, Fox(Hattaway) now
being the intellectual one - probably much smarter than Morse gels well with the less complicated
Whately ( Lewis) although Lewis has changed, an assignment abroad and the death of his beloved wife
have made me much more cynical, he is older wiser and has matured. The stories/plots set in those
wonderful surroundings are brilliant, twists and turns until the very end. This series is
excellent, if you loved Morse you have to buy this - you will not be disappointed.

Summary: This is not Morse
Comment: I am an avid Morse fan and this is not Morse. It has developed. It is like watching the family grow
- they have characteristics of the parents, but are not the parent. This is Lewis and is in the
same family, but not Morse. Had it been Morse, it would have failed. As child of Morse it is
brilliant in its own right. Long may it continue at this high quality. In 20 years we might even
have 'Hathaway'!

Summary: A series in its own right
Comment: Lewis is absolutely brilliant in its own right, kevin Whatley plays the newly returned DCI
excellently. He is still the same Lewis but the death of his wife has changed him he is a little
morose. However he is not Morse nor is he trying to be as some have suggested. His side kick
Hathaway is perfect, he is an ex seminarian who is probably even more clever than Morse. The plots
are well written and can engage an audience. Lewis stands on its own just as well as Morse did.

Summary: Excellent in its own right
Comment: We've watched all the Inspector Morse series and thoroughly enjoyed them. This new series is
absolutely excellent too, in its own right, and in a different way. Over the last twenty years since
he served with Morse, Lewis(now a DCI) has become rather less sunny and sweet than he used to be,
sadder and a little embittered even, especially after the death of his beloved wife Valerie, killed
by a hit and run driver who was never found(I suspect the mystery of who this person was may perhaps
be looked at at some future date). In some ways, he's become more like Morse--more cynical, more
impatient, more apt to jump to conclusions. but he's still very recognisably Lewis, a very human and
endearing character in many ways. And his new sidekick, DS Jim Hathaway, is a gem--cool,
self-contained, mysterious, full of hidden depths--a man who once wanted to be a priest but is now a
cop. They seem an odd couple at first but soon gell really well.
Both the main
actors--Whately as Lewis and Fox as Hathaway--are terrific, they really convey their characters
convincingly and warmly. The rest of the cast in these four stories are also excellent, and the
settings, which are mainly confined to Oxford University, are gorgeous. Great, tight plots and good,
elegant scripts also make these four episodes great viewing. Highly recommended.

Summary: The dynamic duo
Comment: First, I think Lawrence Fox as DS Hathaway is excellent casting. He makes a good substitute for the
academic Morse and perhaps Lewis should have been left as he basically was, a cheerful, nice chap,
rather than having him morph into another Morse. I seem to remember he only drank orange juice or
beer from a can, much to the disgust of Morse. He also did not like classical music. Killing off his
wife to make him sour and available for probably doomed romances, again just like Morse, seems to me
to be straining credibility a little and such a shame. However, personally, I have found all the
stories in this series and the second interesting and am enjoying
this as 'Lewis' rather than
a copy of 'Morse'.
