Summary: As good as TV gets
Comment: I missed most of this series first time round. I can't rememember what I was doing at the time but just hope it was good as this is one of the best bits of TV ever.

Each episode is a stand-alone story, although the main characters' lives are linked by the street and so they may appear again. Every story is a cracker, thoughtfully written and expertly brought to life by convincing actors. Timothy Spall is brilliant as always but he's by no means on his own.

Gritty, witty, powerful, sad, moving. Buy it now!

Summary: TV as it should be
Comment: A few months ago I gave up entirely on TV and ceased my satellite subscription in the USA (for those in other countries the idea of free to air television is aggressively discouraged here). The downside of this is that I miss the few sports events I used to enjoy (despite rampant over-sentimentality and jingoism at every turn). The upside is that I now have started to investigate other things to watch, amongst them this glorious BBC series. I have only watched three episodes so far, but this is what TV could, and SHOULD be if it hadn't long ago abdicated all social respponsibility in the frenzied search for the dollar provided by the lowest-common-denominator aesthetic of our increasingly decrepit society. Its not easy watching, but it is real, and it is honest. Its also true art that tells us things that matter about ourselves, and there is damned little of that happening nowdays!

Summary: Loved it..
Comment: I watched series two last year and whilst I appreciated the fine acting I found it very depressing, especially the last one about the boy killing the baby[was pregnant at the time so possibly it affected me more].
I had never seen Series one but thought I would give it a go,again, being the bargain hunter that I am,for under seven quid it was indeed that,a bargain.
I can honestly say I enjoyed series one much more than series 2.
Whilst its still,at heart,a grimy northern kitchen sink drama,I still thought the stories were more light-hearted,apart from the last episode about domestic violence.
I love Timothy Spall in anything and he pops up in both series but the episode with him and the asylum seeker tickled the life out of me.
Lots of famous faces in this series such as the great Sue Johnson,Jim Broadbent & Jane Horrocks.
I enjoyed this series very much and I think in the coming years it will be looked back on as a fantastic example of how great british made telly can be.
