Back to The Chronicles Of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe [2005]

Ordinary
Comment:
I respectfully disagree with the viewer who said that this was better than the book. With the book,
you can view things with the eye of your imagination, and the imagination can accept many things -
such as a couple of kids in armour on horseback and with zero sword-fighting experience leading an
army of animals into battle. This was just too silly for words. Unfortunately, the world of Narnia
is just not as interesting as Tolkien's Middle Earth (it's interesting to see the echoes of the
"Rings" cycle in some of the images in "Narnia"). For me, in spite of marvellous visual effects and
good acting by the kids involved, "Narnia" simply doesn't come off.

A great film for all!
Comment:
I rented this as the trailers I saw looked very good and vaguely remember reading it at school years
ago. I have to say I was very impressed in what is a great entertaining film for all ages. The
special effects are very impressive, especially the creatures of Narnia. The child actors are very
good and give a great performance.
For those not in the know the story is based on four kids
being sent away from London during the 2nd world war. In the big countryside house they find a
wardrobe that acts as a gateway to the magical world of Narnia. Which is also going through a great
battle of good versus evil.
There is a certain feel of this being a mini Lord of the rings,
but nothing bad about that, although younger kids may get a little scared of some of the bad
creatures. Overall highly recommend this to everyone of all ages, very entertaining! 8/10

Not quite there!
Comment:
Enjoyable film for both adults and children. Not quite excellent, missing something in the childrens
characters for me as an avid book fan.

Better than the books or the BBC serial
Comment:
I had very little desire to see Narina when it came out because although I like fantasy in general I
have never much warmed to this story. That feeling was compounded by the BBC serial from years back
with it's stage school kids and big puppet lion.
However, half way through watching the
dvd I turned to my wife and said, "This is really good, isn't it?"
Seems I'm not alone
for Narnia has out grossed King Kong and no one would have guessed that six months ago. Of course,
having the director of Sherk in control should have suggested it might.
So, in a line;
even if you have previously been put off Narnia give this movie a chance. The effects are great, the
action powerful and the kids performances way better than anything so far seen in the Potter movies.
I now find myself looking forward to the next installment in 2007.

A good depiction
Comment:
As a fan of the books, I set out to be bitterly disappointed by this film. However, in the main, I
was pleasantly surprised as the main elements were a largely accurate depiction. However, my main
criticism is that there's something missing. Once again, the need to fit the film into an acceptable
length for modern cinema goers, leaves no time for the more subtle elements of the film and it does
feel like a bit of a sprint through the story (with some unnecessary additions). The effects are all
very impressive, and there is some excellent characterisations (particularly Lucy, Mr Tumnus and the
beavers). However, it does feel that there is something missing at 'soul level' that you can't quite
put your finger on...
