Summary: Better even than the blu-ray version!
Comment: Don't hesitate! This is five-star in every way - and I've little to add to the other five-star
reviews of this excellent series. In my view, this is right up there with the best of the best. />
I would also point out that disc 5 of this box set, entitled 'Planet Earth - The Future'
contains three excellent documentaries (namely, 'Saving Species', 'Into The Wilderness' and 'Living
Together') that would justify the cost of this box set by themselves. Yet the blu-ray version of
this series (which I also bought) does not include these excellent documentaries - the blu-ray
version instead replaces these with two somewhat middling documentaries (entitled 'Desert Lions' and
'Snow Leopards').

So, in my opinion, this standard DVD version of 'Planet Earth' is
better quality even than the blu-ray version. Not to say considerably cheaper price-wise (on
Amazon)!

As regards the viewing comparison between the standard DVD version of 'Planet
Earth' and the blu-ray version of the series, well, I watched both, and both are outstanding. So
there is really no reason to pay more for blu-ray on that evidence.

Indeed, I now
think, on that evidence, that those with HD TV would be better off buying a DVD upscaler/player,
which is much cheaper than a blu-ray DVD player. Amazon sell a selection of these; something like
the multi-region Philips DVP 5980, or similar, would likely do just fine.

A final
point: Those of you who are looking for wildlife documentaries set somewhere in the British Isles
could also check out the excellent 'Wild Mann' DVD (2005) by Steven Ianson. This title is, however,
sometimes difficult to track down.

Summary: Spectacular images, bad music, and wrong message overall
Comment: It is a collection of the best images of Nature I have ever seen and this is the only reason for the
4 stars. Every single DVD offers incredible and often unusual views of Nature which are really
breathtaking. However, the generally useless music theme covers what it would have been great to
hear (Nature!) and all along the DVDs the narration tends to give a completely wrong message. Life
it is NOT hard in some harsh places in the world or during some season simply because life there IS
adapted to that environment and those conditions. Life would not be easier for a penguin without the
long polar winter. Life of a penguin IS the polar winter! Excellent whatsoever: just watch it with
your kids and explain few things...!

Summary: Best nature documentary ever!
Comment: I've seen several natur documentaries also from David Attenborough now and this is definetly the
most spectaculair one. Even if you're not a fan of nature you'll still enjoy it. It shows you things
you would have never imagined of being on this earth. Also fun for the whole family!

Summary: Simply Epic
Comment: Every schoolchild should be made to watch this awe-inspiring documentary series. Each frame is
breath-takingly beautiful or fascinating, and it really does renew a sense of marvel at the world in
which we are so lucky to live in. Hate to gush, but it deserves it! A true masterpiece.

Summary: BREATHTAKINGLY SPECTACULAR !!
Comment: WOW!! The content on these DVDs is sheer, raw brilliance. I'd never come across this set before,
and was randomly surfing the net when I saw it on Amazon. The reviews intrigued me; "can any set of
DVDs be THIS good?" I asked myself. I finally could resist no longer; I clicked the "buy" button,
waited till they were delivered, and eagerly placed the first disc into my DVD player - only to have
to invest in a new table soon after because of the force with which my jaw hit it when I witnessed,
with my own two eyes, the sheer awe-inspiring beauty of the content. Enough to bring tears to your
eyes - the raw power, the naked beauty, the silent, poetic elegance, the mesmerising, gasping wonder
of all varieties of different creatures we share the planet with is brought before us, on our
screens, in extremely high quality visual imagery.

Empire penguins huddling through
the coldest winter (-70C) on the planet, crocodiles devouring thirsty wildebeest, the annual
migratory patterns of millions of seabirds, hungry lions hunting an African elephant, wild Bactrian
camels eating snow, a mile high mountain of bat poo in a Borneo cave - every inch of which is
covered by cockroaches, a terrifying vampire squid 2 miles deep on the bed of the Pacific Ocean -
these are just some of the amazing content / creatures you will see on this set. All I can wrap up
with is this: don't faff about, just click the "buy" button and watch it - we've not all been paid
by the BBC to write reviews like this!
