Summary: Three of Marilyn's Most Famous Films
Comment: This is a good boxset for a new Marilyn fan or one who wants only a few of her films, for they are her most famous ones (although I think it should include 'Some Like it Hot' too.) All of them are pretty short (all under an hour forty-five) but they're all very good.

How to Marry a Millionaire - 1953. Marilyn plays Pola Debevoise, a short-sighted dumb blonde who wants to, well, marry a millionaire, like her friends Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall (who out of the three is the principal character). The film is light and funny, and 'creamy'!

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - 1953. Marilyn plays gold-digging Lorelei Lee in this musical. The film is probably best known for the song 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend' - excellent by the way - but in fact all of the songs are and so is her co-star Jane Russell.

The Seven Year Itch - 1955. This film is about a married (for seven-years) man's fantasy of having an affair with the blonde upstairs - Marilyn, obviously. It is quite funny (Billy Wilder directed it) though it could seem a little tame and dated due to the 'strait-jacketed' conditions under which it was made. The movie also contains the scene over the subway grate in the white dress - though this too was censored quite a lot.

Something's Got to Give - 1962, unfinished. This was Marilyn's last film and was never completed. It may in fact be the reason to buy this boxset, as it is not available on the Marilyn Monroe Collections. We only have forty minutes to judge it from; the story consists of a woman who was stranded on an island for five years and returns to find her husband remarried. It includes one of the most touching scenes Marilyn ever filmed, her seeing her children again, and she looks absolutely stunning throughout. She and Dean Martin have good chemistry too. The story itself is nothing spectacular, but I suppose the story would not be what you're watching it for - you'd watch it because it was Marilyn's last film.

Mostly the special features are trailers, restoration comparisons or minute-long 'Movietone News' snippets (though there is one where Marilyn presses her hands in the cement). However 'The Seven Year Itch' includes a half-hour doc on the (strait-jacketed) making of the film.

Though there aren't many special features, you could call the two-hour long documentary 'Marilyn Monroe: The Final Days' (in which "Something's Got to Give" is shown) a very big special feature. It is sensitive and very factual, it gives opinions rather than gossip and includes interviews with the people who knew her.

I think this is a great collection, however it might not be what you are looking for. If you want a well-rounded box set that showcases Marilyn's acting abilities, this isn't for you. It is all about the films that made her famous and solidified her persona. Also I think 'Some Like it Hot' should've been included (since it wasn't I bought it too, and so should you!). But overall, really good and (currently) only £3.25 per film (if you include 'The Final Days').

EDIT: I would like to add, in case anyone wants to know, that each disc does not have its own case (the four discs share one case).
