Editorial Reviews: They're here, they're queer, and they make Sex & The City look like a demure tea party. Showtime's quintessentially American Queer As Folk--based on the British miniseries--pours on copious amounts of hot and steamy sex. This slick (and slickly entertaining) series shares the same basic concept as its British counterpart--centering on a group of gay friends living in a primarily industrial city--but after that, all bets are off. Whereas the British version focused on the gritty, realistic drama of its characters, the American QAF is a glossy, fun soap opera that occasionally tackles big issues but never lets you forget that life at times can be a party, and you shouldn't be one of those poor suckers starving to death. A good part of the show's charm lies in its cast--boy-next-door Michael (Hal Sparks), ruthlessly seductive rake Brian (Gale Harold), out-and-proud Emmett (Peter Paige), wallflower Ted (Scott Lowell), and nubile teen Justin (Randy Harrison)--who grew from standard gay prototypes to intriguing characters by the first season's end. And while some subplots didn't work (such as Emmett's farfetched foray into gay-conversion therapy), others were quietly affecting, including Brian's coping with his father's death. Some may object to the show's relentless fixation on sex (and gay men--there are just two lesbian characters), but this is a series that in its own polished way is both engrossingly fun and truly groundbreaking. It's liberating to watch an American TV series in which the straight world is only peripheral. Let's hear it for the boys! --Mark Englehart

Comment: If your gay or a lesbian - this show is fantastic - I have all 5 seasons and I watch them over and over again. I absolutely love it - Brian is so hot and I love his character....Absolutely brilliant....the stories are realistic and keep you interested from start to finish....What more can I say - If you haven't seen it - You are missing the best gay/lesbian show available.....The L Word is great, but not as realistic as this..... Customer Rating: Summary: TOP NOTCH T.V better than the english version!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Comment: the story is like that of the uk version but 10 times more fun , better in many ways (acting directing and you actually feel you know them as your own friends, you will laugh with them and cry with them! me and my wife have many lesbigay freinds and we both cried watching this ,we have seen the complete american season (1-5) and they do become more and more in depth with each person as the seasons progress the only bad thing is that it had to come to an end .... Customer Rating: Summary: a g8 series but for me a different reason to watch Comment: I originally watched the UK series 1 and 2. I was reasonably young then. I watched because my mother played hazel (one of the main characters mother) I loved it and will probably end up watching it again and again. So when I finally got enough money to buy the USA version to see how it compared I was compelled to do so. When I watched the first episode I wasn't very impressed seeing as it is almost identical to the UK version but as I watched on I became more and more engrossed. I loved it and would recommend it to almost everyone (although when my grandparents watched the first episode of the UK version to see my mother the were lost for words and ended up not watching the rest of the series lol) All in all a great watch. Customer Rating: Summary: MAde in the US of A Comment: I watched this having watched several times the UK version (1's gr8, 2's dire). Was hooked from the outset. Yes it's different, less gritty or acknowledging of class and financial differentials, but as good entertainment. QAF USA S1 particularly mirrors the UK scripts. As the series go on (to 5 in total) of course the divergence and characters develop far more so. Sharon Gless ('The State Within' 2006 BBC production - as US Secretary of Defence) cannot act poorly and is a delight in and of herself. Customer Rating: Summary: It rocks! Comment: Gays and lesbians rock in QAF! QAF is as funny and exquisite as Sex and the City; it is both sharp and tender. No matter how many partners you sleep with, life is nothing without friends. The men are to die for (:-D) and everybody has an amazing body (well almost everybody...) I've been hooked quite rapidly. The series may be about enjoying sex and life in general but it doesn't forget to mention AIDS and condoms, which is a good point (season 1 episode 13, there's a very funny scene involving Brian and a condom flying in the air.) You will certainly like this show, whether you're gay, lesbian or straight. ;-) More Reviews
