Summary: The Presenter
Comment: This series is informative, although the presenter can get very pretencious and annoying. She speaks mostly about herself and bigs herself up way too much and it gets in the way of the educational side of the series.

If you're able to ignore her, then you'll enjoy this.

Summary: Interesting yet lacking
Comment: Over view - this is a very energetic show that gives you the history of the martial art as well as an understanding of its functionality. the fighters were amazing and the arts all looked beautiful but deadly.
Cons - you see through the eyes of a martial artist who has had 25 years of training in her chosen martial art, which is evident when she refers to her old joints or the other combatant being younger than her. her fighting abilities were limited, but her willingness to not give up was inspirational in a way. The most annoying thing for me was her form in the martial arts. she saw how the more experienced martial artist would move and she would copy them. this was wrong for me because you should always follow what the instructor tells you to do exactly, if you start to move differently then this allows for an opening that only experienced fighters have reflexes to accommodate for. also it focuses on the history of the martial art which is a good thing, but it does not give you the full feeling and satisfaction of seeing how effectively the martial art works in a real fight. some martial arts like muay thai are very sporting martial arts that require a lot of padding, but can be used in demonstration. however other martial arts like capoeira are full contact and the risk of injury or death is high and they made the right choice to not allow full contact on the show.
Pros - the scenery was sometimes breathtaking and the martial artists were very well trained in their chosen martial arts. their abilities were very inspiring and intimidating at the same time as I feel I have a lot of work ahead of me. my favourite episode was the capoeira episode. the way the fighters move and the way the documentary interacted with the people was very refreshing to see. I personally train in capoeira regional and the scene of the capoeirista breaking watermelons with his kicks was enjoyable. another thing I like about this show is the way they incorporate living legends of the martial art into the show and you can see what they are like.
conclusion - I recommend this show to every martial artist who would like to know the art they are training in, with that little more in-depth knowledge that you can take away with you. sure its not an eye popper that will attract people like a film, but it is an all round documentary that allows you to see the power in the people that drives the martial art.

Stay blessed,

Peace

Summary: not so deadly
Comment: This is great addition to any respectable dvd collection for those interested in learning more about martial arts. Im not talking about learning to take down four guys with a flare of a nostril. Its not that type of documentary.
It takes a look at some of the most popular and some of the less known martial arts through the experiences of the masters teaching in their arts home countries. The masters divulge their secrets to the travelling journalist and Martial Artist Josette Normandeau. The set covers;

KARATE
AIKIDO
MUAY THAI
CAPOEIRA
KALARIPAYATTU .....an Indian martial art (though interesting)
and SAVATE. (...why?)

Lets set out the pros and cons.

Firstly the cons;
It is presented by an aged French-Canadian female Martial Artist. It says on the box that she has had 25years of martial arts experiece. I suppose that she is a good martial artist for her age. In fact, she gets a physical beating off a Savate kickboxer and a verbal beating by one master of her own art ..Aikido.....I thought that was quite funny. It also concentrates on the spiritual. The mind over body and not enough kick-ass chop socky. Although to be fair there are some good moments of each. As a presenter she only lets herself down now and again. I did cringe when she mentioned one master who works as an under cover cop. Lets hope those blokes dont watch it eh? I had visions of him getting surrounded by criminals with machetes because she bumped her gums about what he does. The title is deadly arts. A bad choice of title created by someone who seems to have no knowledge of what the dvd contains.

Now the pro's
It is very well informed and just seeing the masters in action is worth the cringey Jossett moments. I will use the Karate episode as an example. Several masters are visited. One monk, one world war 2 survivor, one cook and the under cover cop (ok i've grassed him up now too!). The way each master has adopted Karate into his sole really shows how much you can get out of martial arts depending on what you put in. Also that you can bring your personality to the art. I believe that being persistant, respectful, dedicated and female, Jossett was more able than anyone else to get masters to let their guard down and talk about themselves and their art. The bonus is that she was on their territory. That was the one let down in mind, body and kick ass moves. It showed too much of home, filling in the gaps as Chris's airfare ate into the budget. Just watching the deadly arts dvd made me want to pack my bags and make off for those exotic lands and do what I love doing best.....and martial arts. Go on, buy it.
