Editorial Reviews: How do you like your blockbuster movies? If the answer’s loud, fast and full of big robots fighting, then you’re well and truly in luck. For director Michael Bay’s take on Transformers, based on the toys of the same name, delivers just that. And with some style.

The film stars the fast-rising Shia LaBeouf (Disturbia) as Sam, who discovers that his first car has a little more to it when it transforms into an Autobot robot called Bumblebee. Fortunately, the Autobots are the good guys, and following not far behind are a good number more, headed up by Optimus Prime. Against them are the less friendly Decepticons, with Megatron at the helm, and the two sides are set for a frenetic battle right in the middle of Planet Earth.

There’s a plot sitting underneath all of this, but it’s pretty much given with the Transformers movie that it’s just a vehicle to get the film from one set piece to another. And there’s little denying that the action sequences are spectacular. Boasting quite staggering special effects, the on-screen action moves with a pace and ferocity that sometimes makes it hard just to keep up with it all, as mighty robots engage is some quite staggering fights. It’s quite an achievement.

Paving the way for an already-in-production sequel, Transformers has little pretensions about what it’s going to do, and is all the better for it. This is a film about big robots, big fights, big effects and, ultimately, big, dumb grin-inducing fun. What, really, is there not to like? --Jon Foster

Summary: Great film, even better in HD
Comment: This film was one I'd been waiting for and loved every minute in the cinema, which I believe was the best cinema experience I've had to date.

It was great to relive it on DVD when my brother bought it to see it for the first time, but now that HD-DVD is more accessible in price I knew it was something I had to do, and I don't regret it AT ALL.

Absolutely stunning visuals show just what this 'dead' format can do. Every scene has new life as each grain of sand, freckle and piece of flying debris looks so good you can almost feel it. A must for any HD collection and now even more worth getting since the price has halved from the initial RRP. 6 out 5 stars :)

Comment: If your reading this then i suspect you have in inkling that this may look good in HD... You would be absolutely right. Visually stunning from start to finish. There hasnt been an advocate for HD that compares to this.

Summary: Talking robots blow stuff up in big explosions
Comment: To enjoy this film you need to remove all common sense from your brain, open your eyes and wait for the explosions.

Any film based on talking robots that have existed in cartoon and toy form is going to be aimed squarely at kids. Yet still Bay still manages to hit the geek audience that wants to see a truck beating down a fighter jet.

This is big budget, it looks expensive, the transformer fx are something else and appear from start to finish. There are issues as with most Bay films. There are too many story threads and little logic in what happens... but who cares.

If you liked Armageddon or Independance Day this is for you.

Summary: Very good picture, great explosions
Comment: I haven't been a Transformers fan while I was a kid for the simple fact you couldn't get them in Romania at that time. I can't say I'm a fan now, but the movie is great, meeting my expectations. Lots of action, fire, guns, great cars, robots...you know...what the kid inside every man needs.
The picture is great, crystal clear, excellent colours. I can't talk about sound because I watched it with the TV speakers...lame, I know.
I love the extras, everything is HD, even on the second disc. What I hate is that you have to change the menu everytime you use it, it doesn't remember your theme. Maybe is the player's fault, I don't know.
4 stars instead of 5 for the battle between Optimus Prime and Megatron - disappointing to say the least. Maybe Starscream will do better in Transformers 2.

Summary: This Rocks!!!!
Comment: This is one awesome film, not only does this HD DVD bring the best in picture & sound, it also has a great soundtrack to the film. The special effects are incredible, although this film may be classified as "over the top" - this is a must see for anyone who enjoys a great film from start to finish. The designing of the characters are truly amazing, they transformers are so cool!
