Summary: AVERAGE FILM !!!
Comment: I was looking forward to watching this but after sitting down and struggling to keep awake I then realised how average it was. It was a low budget effort which in parts was watchable but overall it just didn't do anything that we have't seen before. The blood and gore was ok nothing that really made you turn away as for the acting again it is what you would expect from run of the mill actors. Let's hope they don't do a third film because if I am honest I have seen enough it just did not keep me interested which at the moment with the horror films that are being realeased lately they all seem to be the same very very average.

Summary: Worth checking out if you liked the first movie
Comment: While special effects were pretty outstanding the over use of them, in my opinion made the sequel much weaker than the original. I also felt the character development was a bit shy of interesting. I can't help but compare it to the original which also had spectacular effects however hit a higher level of suspense in between the more gruesome scenes, also the sex, in particular that which went on in one pretty gross lesbian scene with mutilated ghosts, really served no purpose in my mind to the general plot which is of course about helping out the poor trapped souls, who still long for release from the insane asylum doctor's fortress on the hill. There was a lot less use of the simple terrifying look of vintage medical equipment and an old asylum in this film as well although there were glimpses of the old asylum which had a lot of lighting designed much later than the art-deco period the hospital was supposedly from. All in all I think there were some good actors practicing their craft and a weak location with a lot of skilled prop people trying to take the viewer to a scary old hospital. It must have been tough following the previous cast which had a real Oscar winner on board. This film is way to gruesome for the kids, and if you were impressed with the first one you may be a little disappointed with this obviously lower budget sequel. Still it was something to watch.

Comment:

Lets be honest, most straight to video sequels are rubbish. The reason people keep watching is because every now and then one is made that is actually pretty good. That is where this film comes in.

The films plot revolves around a statue that is somewhere in the haunted house which is worth a lot of money. This leads to a group of people, some with good intentions and most without, to find the statue. What follows is a standard horror film set up in which the cast are systematically dispatched one by one. This is where the film succeeds, as some of the deaths are quite inventive and there are some genuinely creepy moments.

If you are a fan of the original, then I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised by this.

Summary: Rent a ghost!
Comment: A pretty good straight to DVD low budget sequel to the underrated original. This definitely shows the budget constraints but there is plenty of cheesey acting, blood, elaborate deaths and pointless nudity of course. Just not up to the standard of the first one and not really scary. However it rises above most straight to DVD horrors. The plot maybe a bit wobbly about the evil in the house staying there due to an ancient statue worth millions but the effects are pretty decent and you could do far worse than this for an evenings viewing.......watch after the credits to!

Summary: Much better than is suggested by other reviews
Comment: In my opinion, "Return To House On Haunted Hill" was a very good sequel to "House On Haunted Hill" (although it would have been better if one or both or the survivors from the first movie had been in this).

It is gory, suspeceful, and has mostly origional deaths - what more could you want from this type of movie? There were a lot more people in the house this time than in the first (about 10) so there is a higher body count, too.

Althought there is quite a lot of gore in this movie (a lot more than in the first movie) it wasn't as gory or over the top as most people were suggesting. But the best thing about the movie I thought was that, while most horror movies either concentrate on either being suspenceful and creepy, or on being violent and bloody, this movie had both gory deaths and suspenceful scenes, so you get the best of both worlds.

Overall a very good sequel, which I'm sure fans of the first movie will enjoy. After seeing this I'm certainly hoping that there will be a third movie in the series.
