Editorial Reviews: Twelve years after Die Hard with a Vengeance, the third and previous film in the Die Hard franchise, Die Hard 4.0 finds John McClane (Bruce Willis) a few years older, not any happier, and just as kick-ass as ever. Right after he has a fight with his college-age daughter (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a call comes in to pick up a hacker (Justin Long, Dodgeball) who might help the FBI learn something about a brief security blip in their systems. Now any Die Hard fan knows that this is when the assassins with foreign accents and high-powered weaponry show up, telling McClane that once again he's stumbled into an assignment that's anything but routine. Once that wreckage has cleared, it is revealed that the hacker is only one of many hackers who are being targeted for extermination after they helped set up a "fire sale," a three-pronged cyberattack designed to bring down the entire country by crippling its transportation, finances, and utilities. That plan is now being put into action by a mysterious team (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood, and Maggie Q, Mission: Impossible 3) that seems to be operating under the government's noses. Die Hard 4.0 uses some of the cat-and-mouse elements of Die Hard with a Vengeance along with some of the pick-'em-off-one-by-one elements of the now-classic original movie. And it's the most consistently enjoyable installment of the franchise since the original, with eye-popping stunts (directed by Len Wiseman of the Underworld franchise), good humour, and Willis's ability to toss off a quip while barely alive. Summary: Certificate 15. Another age advisory.
Comment: Another in a spate of American movies where the age certification label signals the opposite of what was intended, Die Hard 4.0 is definitely for audiences of a physical age no greater than 15, and with a mental age of probably not much more than five.

A dreary, witless, shambolic affair lacking any resonance with the original high-concept movie, it's a stringing together of the most improbable bangs-and-crashes that Computer Generated Imagery can provide with interlinking scenes of dialog that are almost as leaden as the CGI itself.

McClane in original guise was a cinematic hero: as resourceful and quick-witted as they come. Here he's reduced to being nothing more than a foil for stunts so evidently, and so mind-numbingly, implausible that their sheer fakery robs the movie of any interest or entertainment value at all.

A waste of time, even if turned off after the first interminable hour.

Summary: "Die Hard 4.0" or "Live Free or Die Hard" depending on where you live
Comment: This, as you have guessed, is the 4th Die Hard movie, coming about a decade after number 3.

Since we last saw John McClane the world has technologically grown up without him. He's an old school cop in a high tech world. The general plot is he is sent to pick up a 'hacker' who is wanted by some terrorists who also want to take over the US using solely technology as their weapon.

The film is 2 hours of action, almost non-stop. Yes you'll need to suspend belief, but it's a Die Hard movie, goes without saying. Personally I really enjoyed this movie and it's great to see Bruce Willis reprise John McClane. Best action movie I've seen this year, so far.

Summary: An action movie lost in action
Comment: This movie is constant action but fails to deliver anything new, you have seen most things done better in other movies like James Bond Casino Royale. Computer-generated imagery just doesn't make up for a poor script. Not a bad time but lacks that special something that made Die Hard and Die Hard with a Vengance good movies.

Summary: Ridiculous but excellent fun !!!
Comment: You could easily spend the whole film analyzing it & pulling it apart, but who cares if it is a bit unbelievable it's agreat action film & Bruce is still believable as an action hero.
Worth watching for the action sequences alone. Great fun just sit back & be entertained

Summary: Fun but not a keeper
Comment: This movie sits comfortably alongside Die Hard 2 as an above average action movie with plenty of spectacle and wit but not much that will stay with you after the end credits roll.
The film represents an interesting (but slightly irritating) departure from the Hollywood action block buster formula where the generic action hero survives on his wits: He/she finds solutions to problems in the blink of any eye and out wit baddies with a mix lightening reflexes and smarts. (e.g.Die Hard hero John McClane used to tape guns to his back, fire blanks at police chiefs, etc).
But in Die Hard 4.0 John McClane is almost totally witless and only manages to win the day through a mix of stubborn courage and dumb luck. Maybe this is a subtle metaphor for American foreign policy? Probably not...
The last `money shot' involves McClane surviving a shown down between a jet fighter and a truck which destroys an entire section of freeway. How does he do it? Dumb luck. A formula that had really started to grate on me by this point in the film.
One last comment: Justin "Hi, I'm a mac" Long gives a really enjoyable performance. I hope we get to see him in some more prominent roles in the future. Kevin Smith is as useless as ever. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a great feisty heroine.
