Comment: I have been bought this as a Chrissy prezzie......but ended up with it early as I kept going on and on and on and on .... you get why now don't you! Anyway, to be honest I have probably seen most of the episodes but its nice to have the box set and have the odd x files weekend dvd fest. I have watched a few of Season 8 and 9 and thought oh yeah...remember that one. Fight the Future (The first movie) is a work of art compared to the new one. I love the fact that ALL the cd's were actually in the box set and in the places they should have been. Judging by some of the comments CD's have been missing or in the wrong case or there have been duplicates. So I consider myself one of the lucky ones! I think Mulder is great but don't feel like seasons 8 and 9 suffer without him like some reviews have stated. I think Gillian Anderson and the new characters more than makes up for his absence.......but we still love you MulderXX

Comment: Got to say that i am extremely dissapointed in Amazon right now, i bought this set as a gift to my mum for crimbo, only to find that on testing the disk for flaws and problems before i wrapped them, that a number eouldn't even load on any DVD player i tried them on.

I ordered a replacement set but the same problem has occured. Now i am having to look for an alternative gift only days before christmas.

Very dissapointed that Amazon can't seem to get a working copy to me -- is it a production issue?

If so Amazon should take it up with the manufacturers.

Summary: Nice to get back to the series
Comment: After watching the second X files film (which was a bit disappointing) I felt very nostalgic for the series which had spawned it. Only £65 or so on amazon, so that's about 30p per episode, plus you get the first feature film. Most people must know what the show is about, right? An x file is a case which has been deemed to be unsolvable by the FBI, usually because it has some sort of paranormal explanation which no normal agent will think about. Agent Fox Mulder set about investigating the X Files and became an expert in the paranormal, after coming to believe he witnessed his little sister being abducted by aliens. His partner is Dana Scully, who is assigned to work with him to use her scientific and medical background. Each episode usually starts off with a weird occurence, often a murder. The agents are called in, Mulder has some weird explanation (vampires, zombies, ghosts, aliens, mutants, freaks, time travel) and scully tries to come up with more plausible ideas. Usually mulder is right. About 10% of the episodes involve an ongoing storyline about a conspiracy in the government to hide evidence of aliens and their plot to colonise the planet, linked to Mulder's sister's abduction. Those episodes often show us the most personal sides of the agents and their lives.

Having forgotten most of the episodes, it was a bit of a shock to see just how ridiculous and awful some of them really were! Too many of them had a weird, vague ending with no clear resolution, this became more and more evident in season 9, esp whenever Monica Reyes was involved.

Watch from season 1, when the characters are still fresh, and you see Dana Scully as a bright young agent, yet to be dragged into giving up her normal life to an endless search for the truth, all the way to season 9, where Mulder has gone into hiding and been replaced by new agents Doggett and Reyes, with scully having finally had to give up her skepticism and take on the role of a believer. The evolution of the two key characters is great, as is that of their supervisor, Assistant director Skinner. I mentioned there were many awful espisodes, but you get to see all the great ones too - Beyond the sea, Tooms, Sleepless, One Breath, Clyde Bruckman's final repose, Small potatoes, Demons.... list goes on and on! The worst has got to be fearful symmetry - where aliens are abducting and impregnating zoo animals.... Plus you get to watch all the mythology episodes.

There are extras of course. Many episodes have deleted scenes (almost none of them were of any interest, except for in the pilot episode where Dana Scully was supposed to have a boyfriend). There are little documentaries discussing each season, most of which are dull. There are also a few shows trying to pull together the various threads of the mythology to make them easier to understand - alien abduction, the black oil, colonisation, supersoldiers.

Box set is a bargain, v glad to be back with these episodes. Seasons 6,7 and 9 were prob the worst of the series, but every series has at least one gem, so try going through them all!

Summary: Convoluted, but appealing
Comment: Since there are more detailed reviews for this set in the site, I'll just give basics.

This is the complete X-Files set minus the more recent 2008 movie. You get every episode and the late 90s movie which is set halfway between season's 5 and 6.
The movie doesn't have many extras, the season boxset's however do. Ranging from deleted scenes to behind the scenes features. The sound and picture is excellent and even shows how things progressed from the first episode up to the final episode in terms of make up, camera and light use and acting.

The box sets are done in an odd way though and you have to be gentle to avoid any damage to the discs, it would have been nice if they had gone with the excellent slim line cases that are being used for box sets now. But other than that, this is a worthwhile box set to get, especially if you loved X-Files.
I have to admit that I'm not as fond of X-Files as I am of Star Trek, but I was satisified with this box set and was gripped by several episodes. Though I'm still more fond of Star Trek even after watching all of X-Files, this is still a good thing to be watching and saves having to switch on the TV to the mindless junk that passes for prime time TV these days.

Recommended? Yes and no. Yes because it's every episode and the 90s movie, no due to the box design that risks damaging the discs if you're not gentle.
If you love the X-Files, go for it. If you're looking for something to watch that isn't the same old rubbish reality tv shows, go for it. If you like a very convoluted story with a lot of plot twists, go for it. And if you like gruesome, weird and unusual story's, go for it.

Just remember to be gentle when opening the boxs. Oh, and I forgot to mention that you also get a small booklet that gives a brief description of each episode and the 90s movie.

TV at it's weirdest and best.
