Comment: I was bored from the start, hoping it would get better and that something interesting would
happen... it didn't. The only positive I have is that the acting is quite good but my God what a
dull film.

Summary: Ehhh
Comment: After all the hype I thought I was going to be in for a treat - oh how I wish I had read the other
Amazon reviews first.

Personally the film is so very very very very slow and the plot,
if you want to call it that, is weak. The only redeeming feature is a single very long continuous
shoot in the middle of the film set on the beach at Dunkirk. Other than that 3 min's of impressive
cinematography it was 2 hrs of my life I will never get back.

Summary: Thanks to your intelligent reviewers! Can I give no stars!
Comment: I am delighted that I looked up your reviews- my wife and I thought that we were the only 2 people
who thought this was a pile of tosh. It is quite amazingly cliche-d. I mean the bit when he runs
after the bus has to be a joke doesen't it? No it turns out it is not! So obvious - have these
people not watched how to do this properly? Try 'Passage to India', Brideshead etc. Every part of
the first hour is a cliche from another film - the most obvious bits - and the soldiers -cor blimey
guv etc - really this is just too much and so insulting to the audience! Yep they always jump in the
fountain don't they! This is just so unbelievable.
Thanks to your sensible reviewers I am
convinced of the sanity of the world - I will try to complete watching it but honestly it is
ponderous, and tedious (the Emperors New Clothes a reviewer said - how true!) Can I give No stars?

Summary: Mechanical
Comment: Audiences may lose patience with this film.

The piano and violins play on in Atonement
(2007). There is also the dum-dee-dum tempo of a typewriter. But, apart from the score, Atonement is
a plodding and basic British production.

The lighting is there, as well as lots of
English props (trees, paintings, birds singing, lakes, beautifully tinted paper, ornaments, lamps,
flowers, necklaces, coffee tables and so on). The opening thirty minutes are tightly and masterfully
cut and edited.

However Atonement (2007) is a war/crime drama that does not appear to
show the art of motion picture. There are only a few elements of artistic novelty and use of space -
e.g. there is a deliberately exuberant sequence involving Cecilia (Keira Knightley) relaxing on a
diving board in a fashionable swim suit (which will be in the BFI brochures). But otherwise this
production is very basic. At times it looks like a beautifully filmed made-for-television
production. Like a Pride and Prejudice for the BBC.

It's dramatic moments arrive in a
perfunctory and underwhelming manner - like they do in the thousands of mediocre drama programmes.
Whether intended or not, Atonement frequently loses it's narrative authority and becomes
increasingly dull to watch.

Atonement relies heavily on post production sound to carry
it forward.

The characters are basic.

The plot proceeds in a very
predictable manner to deliver a very predictable and unshocking twist.

A noticeably
plodding film which is not groundbreaking and lacks artistic credibility and, at times, artistic
direction. Better worlds could have been created that were more authentic. The audience will also
visually notice actors are slurping from empty tea cups, and there are other errors.

Summary: What's all the fuss about?
Comment: I am a woman who loves a good romance story and I don't care when or where it takes place, from Gone
With The Wind and Jane Eyre to Bridget Jones and Brokeback Mountain. I sat down to watch this film
with a great sense of excitement after all the hype I'd read and heard about, including it's oscar
nominations. Imagine my dispair when I found out that it was all just that...hype.

I
have given this film two stars and these are simply for James McAvoy and Saoirse Ronan. The story is
good enough but the portrayal of the other characters left me wanting a hell of a lot more. They
seemed lifeless compared to McAvoy and Ronan. I was glad to find that Keira Knightley was hardly in
it and can't for the life of me think why ANYONE would expect her to be nominated for an Acadamy
Award, I'm just glad she wasn't! All she does is pout and talk posh and in my eyes she's no more
talented than my little toe! (Ok, rant over!)

Ronan is exceptional as the young sister
of Knightley and I was totally engrossed by her screen presence. I foresee great things from her in
the future and she well deserves any recognition she may well receive. I found myself feeling drawn
to McAvoy's character too. He plays it very well.

My hubby fell asleep during this film
and that doesn't happen very often. He woke up just before the end and said exactly what I was
thinking..."Well, the search for the worst film of the year is over!"

If you're looking
for a fantastic movie look elsewhere!
