Summary: great photography, tedious film
Comment: I found this a self indulging, pointless and irretating film, with the added dis-advantage that one
has to watch keira's usual inability to act; full screne aimlessly cowing in various outfits,
feeling sorry for herself. Wonderful cinematography kept me watching, but this is an 'up your own
navel' pretentious, overrated film not worth the accolates it got and not worth the time watching.

Summary: A beautiful, emotional rollercoaster of a story
Comment: A beautifully shot, evocatively told tale of love, jealousy and war.
I was supremely
uninterested in watching this initially but was gripped within the first 5 minutes.
Having
never read the book I had no idea what the plot had store so I won't reveal anything (unlike several
reviews below this) but I would recommend this film to anybody.
Haunting and sad.

Summary: Technically good. In terms of a story .... Snooze city.
Comment: The film deserves some of the accolades it got. It is well put together and has classic scenes
bolted to each other. The backdrops and sets, costumes, atmosphere etc etc are all very good. It may
even be better than the actors deserve. (The acting was dated .... I don't know whether that was
intentional but it comes across 'wooden'). Sadly though.... what a waste of production resources.
The story is un-surprising, the twist at the end was feeble and most people can see it come miles
away, and finally it was simply 'dull'. There's a good reason most people never heard of the book.

Summary: So damn BORING!
Comment: I was so disapointed when i went to see this film. I was really looking forward to it and i love
james mcavoy (who was really good in the film) but the film could not be saved. I just remember
about 2/3 through the film really wanting to walk out but determined to sit through to the end as it
had gotten such good reviews, i turned to my friend and at least i wasn't alone, she hated it
too.
I don't know how this god nominated for best film, director etc awards, for the directing
i just remember hating the 'beach' scene where it was a camera panning shot, with the singing, i
just thought 'why?'. It felt like art being done for arts sake, not for the movie, or that was my
impression at the time. And i have absolutely no intention of watching this film ever again as i
hated it.
The only thing i DID like about the film was the soundtrack - the tune with the
typewriter keys clicking was a really good tune - its just a shame they couldn't have ANOTHER good
piece of music to use as after you'd heard it about 4 times it DID get a bit tedious

Summary: DREADFUL!!
Comment: I suppose after all the hype I should have expected it. Wooden and totally unbelievable... Keira
desperately trying to be as good as Nicole Kidman (who also kept saying "come back to me") in Cold
Mountain, but Keira is not such a good actress and the film did not have the redeeming features of
Rene Zelweger or Jude Law. During the scene where Keira jumped into the fountain, which was quite
early in the film, I couldnt help wishing she had stayed there. Sorry my first review and moved to
it by watching an ill-conceived, self-indulgent and over-hyped waste of time. I do own the book but
have not read it yet... perhaps I had best not bother.
