Summary: weakness and evasion
Comment: A film so slight as to be almost unperceivable. Forty minutes before anything happens - I made a cup
of tea. Boys and girls playing in a castle of foreboding. I reach for the Hob Nobs. Damn,the male
lead is taken in a Police car. A little girl watches. Thumping soundtrack. Allusions quarry. It's
all jolly good. Show. 81 minutes and snoring. Rose-tinted spectacles writing the past by numbers,
terribly academic. Cack. A twist in the tale; Vanessa Redgrave is still alive.

Summary: *Sniff* - very sad, but very good
Comment: Atonement was big news when it was released at the cinema, mainly because of the two main stars, the
divine James McAvoy, and the stunning Keira Knightley. Unfortunately, in this day and age, it tends
to be films that bring the original book to people's attention, as opposed to the other way around.
However, I haven't yet read the book so I'll just comment on the film in isolation. And I have to
say, it was really bloody good.

It's the story of a young couple in love, who are
caught getting up to no good in the library of her home. Her meddling little sister is confused by
the situation, and events that follow the same evening are blown out of all proportion, and the
young man, Robbie is wrongly accused of a crime he didn't commit. This leads to the young couple
being separated, and living a life they never in a million years expected.

A tragic
and yet beautiful love story, Atonement had me in tears, particularly towards the end when the film
comes to its ultimate climax. The performances by McAvoy and Knightley were excellent, and in the
scenes before they truly realise their feelings for one another, you could cut the tension with a
knife. The passion was palpable, and once more, Ms. Knightley had me really wanting to be in her
shoes! Especially up against the damn bookcase - sexy or what!?

Anyway, naughtiness
apart, I spent large amounts of the film either crying, gasping or hiding behind my cushion, which
surely, is the sign of a good film. I have no doubt the book will have me a blubbering mess in no
time.

Summary: Good adaptation of a complicated book
Comment: I've read the book and think that in his screenplay Christopher Hampton has done a remarkably good
job in translating the complexities of the book into a coherent film; particularly over the flitting
back and forth in time and the switching between the young girl's, Briony's, interpretation of
events and what actually happened. I thought all the actors were good. My only criticism is that the
scenes depicting the Dunkirk evacuation, though impressive, go on too long. The final scene of
Briony as an elderly woman, played so sensitively by Vanessa Redgrave, is moving and lifts the film
into something quite special.

Summary: The Most Boring Film Ever
Comment: I cannot believe that this is the same film nominated for an OSCAR. The plot is trite, the acting
pathetic and the plot SO boring. It is so bad I am lost for words!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avoid it at all
cost.

Summary: Very boring.
Comment: I expected a lot from this film after all the hype, it is full of very unlikeable characters and
goes on and on for ages with not a lot happening, the best bits are the last 20 minutes that is if
you can stay awake that long.
