Summary: All the ingredients but sadly lacking...
Comment: This has all the ingredients for what should be a stunningly beautiful and moving film. The
photography and score are equisite, the acting is excellent and the plot has everything- love,
betrayal, loss, war, suffering and hope. Considering all this, I'm still wondering why this film had
absolutely zero effect on me whatsoever!

As another reviewer has mentioned, I did not
have any empathy with the leading characters- celia and Robbie; and to be honest, wasn't really that
bothered that by the end their tragic love story had a sad ending. I'm not sure why I didn't care as
the acting was excellent but I think that the characters were lacking a "human" element that allows
the audience to start to feel for them and identify with them. For starters, Keira Knightly's
character came across as totally posh, arrogant, cold and aloof and not someone whom I would imagine
would indulge in a passionate affair or have any warmth at all. The leading man, Robbie, I also felt
was somewhat unemotional and even when they both say "I love you" to each other, frankly, I just
didn't belieeve it- there was no chemistry there. Sorry to go against the grain but this just left
me cold considering the rave reviews its had. As soon as I finished watching the film I had
forgotten it which in my opinion is a sign of a poor film....

Summary: Something was missing
Comment: The best thing I can say about Atonement is that I didn't dislike it. I thought the cinematography &
musical score were great, and the acting was top-notch. But in the end I never connected with the
characters. I didn't find myself rooting for Robbie and Cecilia, nor was I scandalized or put off
by Briony's actions.

I guess the end result is this- when you're not invested, it's
almost impossible to truly enjoy a film . Plus (at 2 hours, 2 minutes) it felt about 25 minutes too
long...

Summary: I loved it!
Comment: I really wasn't expecting much from this film. Having been hyped up so much, i felt that it would
only disappoint me. How wrong was i? I'll admit that this film was a bit slow to begin with, with
strange time switches. However, once i got my head around what was going on (quickly as the film
makes it clear), i was hooked. And the ending.....i was NOT expecting the ending. Oh how i cried!!
It's days after i watched this film and i'm STILL thinking about it. Definitely watch!

Summary: Merchant Ivory-type costume-drama from an Ian McEwan novel....but NOT your average Mr Darcy type film . It has some grit.
Comment: If you appreciate and love everything about the 1930's, then this is a treat, the decor and the
costumes are spot on, and the characters had me transfixed.... This is definitely in a class above a
lot of other flimsier more shallow films of this type.

This is a genuinely moving love
story, about how cruel fate can be, and how life can sometimes take very drastic turns which take
everyone by surprise, leaving everyone in a state of shock and loss...

The film also
deals with the reality of being in the second world war, and it is heartbreaking to watch but very
grounding at the same time.

I just loved this film.Beautiful.

Summary: Atonement
Comment: This was in a book club I was in - I started reading it but found the material quite disturbing. I
gave up on the book but decided to see the film. It had me on the edge of my seat with suspense and
I thought is was beautifully filmed. It isn't a blockbuster but the acting is excellent. The story
line is quite depressing but it makes you think. I highly recommend it.
