What a load of hype over nothing
Comment:
My husband bought this for Valentine's Day and we were both looking forward to watching it after
seeing clips of it on TV.
It was made to look like a really good romantic film.
/>
So we sat and we watched and we waited for a good story to kick in. Well we waited in vain
because this was such a disappointing story. I guess some people may say it has a twist at the end -
I suppose so but it's not one worth sitting through the entire film for.
It's actually
more depressing and bleak than romantic.
Major letdown and I shall not bother to read
the book. Over-hyped load of rubbish and probably because it was supposedly written by a famous
actor (should have known better really!). Watch it and see for yourself if you must but I would rent
it first or wait for it to come out on digi and certainly not waste your money buying a copy!

Massive disappointment
Comment:
I sat down to watch this film looking forward to something special having read all the hype. It was
all I could do to see it through to the end. A load of pretenious twadle laced with sterotype brits.
Nice photography is about all on the plus side.
Very missable I'm afraid.

A perfect period piece - unmissable

Everything about this film just feels so right - firstly, it
just looks so damn good. You really get the feel of those halycon days of the early 20th century and
even when those idylic countryside manor shots are contrasted against the brutality of war - shots
of destroyed towns and desolate fields still look awesome.
The gorgeous Keira Knightly
is perfect in her role, performing admirably right through the film from the pivotal sex scene in
the library (something any guys watching the film will be VERY interested in) to the way her faith
in Robbie remains firmly resolute through everything.
James McAvoy is equally
effortless in the way he commands his role and the way he is wrongly accused for the crime and then
later dies is just heartwrenchingly sad. You really feel for him.
But truly the star of
the show is the character of Briony who although initially appears as a medlesome and naive child
progresses into an intensely deep character - her thoughts and emotions sewing all the strands of
the plot together. It is her story you follow and by the end you can not help but sit back and
admire how she managed to perservere through it all.
The film has it all - the firt
half taking on the air of hedonistic period drama, romance and touches of who-dunnit thriller before
progressing into an intensly realistic portrayal of life in wartime. There's even quite a few 'war'
scenes with Robbie that will please fan's of stuff like Saving Private Ryan' - the long take at the
beaches of Dunkirk in particular is amazing. On the whole the film is perfection, which is a real
surprise for me as i had no idea what to expect before i watched it. Highly rated indeed - you need
to see this film!

Comment:
First off, I'm one of those who like to read the book before seeing the film and with this it was no
different - I loved the book (even if the beginning was quite slow moving) and with reading the book
first comes a certain amount of expectations for the film and admittedly, it took me at least half
hour into the film to get used to the very slight changes to the plot and missing sections from the
book.
Unfortunately, after that half hour I became completely and utterly engrossed and
enchanted with the film.
The director has stayed very close to the book and it really pays off
- theres none of the Hollywood-ised, shallow dramatics - this is a story of pure tragic romance and
penitence from the central character, Briony.
The acting from all the actors is superb (even
Keira Knightley who I haven't ever really rated, but she shines here) and I think it will be hard
for all of them to top.
The only major difference I could see was the ending and in my view I
think it works particuarly better than if they had stuck to the original.
Overall this is a
wonderfully made film and beautifully shot - and the ones who didn't like it obviously have no
patience or appreciation for such a great, heart-rending piece of work.
But the question you
should ask yourself at the end of the movie, is whether you think Briony really did atone for what
she did in the summer of 1935?
My take, no she did not.

"Hooray for British Films! - they always living in the past" (Alexey Sayle)
Comment:
Fame of the Merchant Ivory epics clearly keeps sleepless some producers and film directors - but
have they got what it takes to make another blockbuster? Shameful alchemy of 'loadzamoney'
investments and semi-nude Sun-style glimpses of a heroine in pre-release marketing along with
various bits of "A Standard British Melodrama Kit" in production can only fool us, viewers, for a
short while. But of course there are millions of us - so the rogue film-makers can still manage to
grab their '15 minutes' of fame and some cash to travel to Hollywood. But what about the ART of
film-making? What about the basic respect for your audience? But are they bothered?..
I
have enjoyed a skillfully mixed advert of this film before it was released, pre-booked my DVD on
Amazon and was really looking forward to seeing a picture everyone seemed to be talking about. What
have I seen? a weak, uneven and fragmented story, at least three different styles of shooting which,
frankly, don't go well with each other and what is more - they don't belong to the film's time and
story, rather unusual editing (was the editor previously at MTV or VH1?? or is he just on drugs?),
great actors playing and behaving strangely, love without love, great props, some ghosts of 'The
English Patient' and alike, standard pseudo-classical meant-to-be-moving music, overemphasised word
"C**T", scenes which were supposed to be sensual but reminded more of some 'hot hip-hop pop videos'
and lacked the finesse of erotic art, giving instead a sweaty feel of a porno b-movie.
/>The film will most definitely find its audience and fascinate people who have seen little of
classical cinema masterpieces and are prepared to believe contemporary story-tellers and their lies
about the past which only aim to justify the absence of creativity and talent in some modern art and
the degraded state of human relationships and moral values today.
I however found
watching Atonement a waste of time, empty and pointless. Buying it on a DVD was clearly a mistake.
In future I may consider downloading pirate copies of such over-hyped movies to preview before
buying - as even the rental fee for them will be too much!
