Back to Atonement [2007]

Disappointment
Comment:
One of the worst films i've ever seen, the acting and directing was awful
and Mcavoy's accent
has to be some kind of joke. I'll probably give the book a try, if only to see if it's as bad as
this lousey film.

Better Than Expected
Comment:
Before I watched this film I thought I was going to loathe it.
I was pleasantly
surprised by this wickedly-woven web set around the second world war.
Don't get me
wrong, this is far from flawless. The ending is pretty terrible (I never do like writers writing
about people who write, it always seems so unnecessarily conceited) even if it does leave you with
the lasting taste of sorrowful injustice which is the overall aim.
However, there are
enough shrewd observations in the storytelling and plenty of strong acting performances to make this
one worthy of all those award nominations. Keira Knightley (Cecila) turns heads as an almost
reluctantly upper-class young woman with a passionate edge, while leading male James McAvoy (Robbie)
is nothing short of superb.
The plot is a mixture of parody and scandal, culminating in
tragedy underpinned with a sense of helplessness. The themes explored are delicate- a difficult and
explicit introduction to sex for a young girl (Briony) sparks off the prominent storyline- yet
treated with sublime dignity and harrowing realism.
I particularly enjoyed the scene
which depicted the Dunkirk beaches prior to evacuation in 1940. This is probably the most
impressive such depiction I've seen, as it captures the poignant mood brilliantly.
/>Overall this is well worth a look, just don't expect it to slap you in the face too often (as
happens with Robbie's typewriter and elsewhere with the chocolatier) because the name of the game is
subtlety, a game "Atonement" wins despite being so beautifully punctuated with a heart-wrenching
sense of loss.

Try before you buy
Comment:
I know - I should have known better, but I actually bought a copy. My best advice would be to borrow
a copy from a friend (if you can find one who admits to having bought it) Then smile sweetly,
without comment, when you hand it back. If you do not consider it absolute super-hyped rubbish then
write a positive review.

A SECONDTIME AROUND FILM.
Comment:
Having watched the trailer and read the story's synopsis I pretty much was able to follow the plot
but if I had watched it 'cold' I would have probably been a little confused with the flash backs and
of the alternate view of Briony's interpretation of events, however you really appreciate this film
having watched it a second time.I do think though that the acting, atmosphere and quality of the
film does qualify for a 5 star rating.

Worth a look - Worth an Oscar???
Comment:
I rented this movie because of the large number of Oscar nominations - so it just had to be a great
film. Clearly, as a large number of reviewers in this column intimate- good but not great. The
storyline is engaging and believable and I grew to like the flashbacks although some did appear
rather abrupt.I do not deliberately knock the film because of its high profile, indeed I am happy to
see all Ms Knightley's work, but the on-screen chemistry was distinctly wooden.
