Back to Atonement [2007]

Summary:
Powerful story, beautifully filmed
Comment:
One of my favourite films of 2007, this made a great impact on me when I saw it in the cinema, and
watching clips screened on TV since only reminds me of the many highlights that it features.
/>The storyline of the film is well-structured - based around a young girl's confused and spiteful
reactions to her older sister's romance. Joe Wright as director subtly shifts styles, leading from
the clipped and mannered 1930s through the upheavals of WW2, and on to the dramatic revelations in
the sterile TV studio at the conclusion (delivered by the excellent Vanessa Redgrave).
This
is one of those films that makes terrific use of the wide screen, nowhere more so than in the
excellent recreation of the soldiers' views of the long wait for evacuation from Dunkirk.
/>Performances from the whole cast are very good, with James McAvoy in particular delivering what
will hopefully be just one of many memorable roles to come.
Highly recommended!

Excellent
Comment:
Some have described this film as over rated. I would suggest a second look. It is superbly acted,
well filmed and has one of the best sound tracks I have heard in a long time. Not everyone's cup of
tea, granted, so if you are looking for action/adventure etc., don't look here. Recommended.

DON'T MISS IT!
Comment:
Having read the book many times I was apprehensive as to how faithful the film would be to the
important issues in it, but what an excellent film it is!
The long hot boring summer is
portrayed by the simple expedient of the buzzing of a bee trapped in the window and the constant
tapping of a typewriter leads us into the awareness that this is a book which is being written.
/>The young Briony ( Saoirse Ronan) walks stiffly and quickly, conscious of herself and the fact
that she is always playing a part as she looks for someone to listen to her script.
The slow
beginning is contrasted with the speed in which the events of the terrible night of the rape lead up
to the arrest of Robbie and it is brilliant how one sees the camera pan in on Briony's face and eyes
as that scene is imprinted on her mind forever....
Then the Dunkirk scenes and the
faces of the exhausted men all waiting to be rescued from the coast, all dealing with the situation
in their own manner. Some are singing hymns, some are drinking and fighting, others make sure that
there is nothing of any worth left....
It is a very moving part of the film.
The
scenes in the hospital, based on what Ian McEwan read and heard, are harrowing and the older Briony
(Romola Garai) experiences a baptism of fire when she has to sit with a young soldier as he
dies.
Then the film nears its end as Briony tries once again to make reparation, to
achieve atonement for her terrible crime and then finally there is the twist in the tale when
Briony, played brilliantly by Vanessa Redgrave brings the film to its end.
The music is
brilliantly chosen, the tapping of the typewriter accompanying so much of the score as memories
flood into Briony's mind, and the superb acting of all three Briony characters and Cecilia(Keira
Knightley) and Robbie (James McAvoy) and indeed all the characters is an experience not to be
forgotten. The soldier who cares for Robbie at Dunkirk does so with gentleness and compassion which
contrasts with the stream of invective against the enemy.
It would be a shame not to
have seen this film.
Do buy it so that you can watch it over and over and focus on all the
small details which go to make up the fantastic whole.

Most Overrated Film of 2007?
Comment:
This was a real disappointment. I had avoided reading any reviews of the film so that I could make
up my own mind... and although the overall production standards were generally good, some of the
acting veered between "Brief Encounter" melodrama and mumbled Method acting. The pace of the film
for the first 40 minutes was just too slow and none of the characters was particularly sympathetic
or, indeed, interesting. I can see why the promotion of the film is so central to the British film
industry but I suspect that this film will be forgotten in a few years.

Flippin' eck.. sorry,.not one I'd remember for days after..
Comment:
Having read with anticipation all the reviews about the film I settled down to watch a thoroughly
moving and memorable film. What I did find was a fragmented storyline when just getting into the
scene and your attention is captivated by it, your left asking " Hold on a minute...?"Ok so
switching from truth to fiction that was gist of it, but felt as though had been cheated out of a
great film .One fault, I believe nurses were not allowed to roam the streets in their uniform(due to
contamination). Excellent performances from James McAvoy as usual, Vanessa Redgrave- spot on,and
young "Briony" - well done!.Keira is perfection personified, acting is a bit same old, same old
though.
