Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Good Picture, Good Documentary - Wrong Encoded Frame Rate Comment: Main Documentary: encoded at 1080p24 (slowed down from original) Making of Documentary & interviews: encoded in standard definition 50i This is a good documentary, with a good, usually sharp picture for the main feature. It was filmed at 25p and 50i but they've slowed the whole thing down to 24p (except for the making of documentary & interviews, which are in standard definition 50i). Sometimes the picture is a bit juddery even on a HDTV capable of native 24p (which you'd have to get if you don't want 3:2 pulldown judder - which you wouldn't get if it was in it's native 25p/50i format) - which may be because of the slow down to 24p, losing motion resolution. I'd have given this at least 4 stars if it was encoded at it's original 25p/50i frame rates, but as it's been slowed down, and as the documentary features fast running animals, the slow 24p frame rate does not have the resolution to capture the motion in the scenes, especially when things in the scenes move at high speed, that and the artefacts added because of the frame rate slow down of the whole documentary they did when they encoded it. Please give us our British-made documentaries at their original 25p & 50i frame rates, and choose a frame rate high enough to capture high speed action in scenes (how about 1080p50 for scenes that need it? It can easily be converted to 1080i50 for Blu-ray, and future upgrades to Blu-ray or other Hi-def devices will surely be made compatible with 1080p50 if there is enough content). Other slightly negative points (apart from the issues described above): * The making of documentary, whilst encoded at it's original 50i is only in standard definition - why wasn't this made at 1920x1080@50i for better quality? For half the time in the standard def interviews they're in extreme close-up. Why? People will be watching on a big HDTV -there's no need - half the time they zoom in so close you can't even see their whole face in the frame. * No pop-up menu in all sections like other discs have so you can't select different options without stopping playing (and pressing menu while a documentary is running doesn't instantly give you the menu you have to wait while it loads). There is a pop-up menu available in the main documentary but none while watching the making of/interviews and the scene selection on the main one is badly done. * There could have been more variety in the documentary. It has stuff about polar bears, seals, and a few bits about forest animals and elephants etc. but there could have been a lot more different stuff (for a documentary called Earth you'd think they'd have a bit more about Earth itself) and the documentary is too short I think, especially considering the price. Customer Rating: Summary: Stunning. Comment: This is an absolute masterpiece. I own many of the wildlife DVDs and this is the best of them all. The picture quality is out of this world, it will really show off your HD tv. The narration by Patrick Stewart is excellent (unlike Tilda Swintons on 'Galapogos' which is the worst I have ever heard) and it is extremely well pieced together. This DVD is a must for all wildlife fans and HD tv owners. Simply stunning. Customer Rating: Summary: Seen it all before.. Comment: Previous to what you might have heard this DVD has almost 90% of the same film material as the Planet Earth DVD series. For those people who dont want to spend £15 more on the better presented and narrated box set this film is for you. Patrick Stewart is a fine replacement narrator although word for word its almost exactly the same as David Attenborough's narration in Planet Earth. If yours kids are the kind to loose interest in documentaries quickly then this DVD is also for you, as in conclusion it is a brief overview of the material shown in the Planet Earth Series. Customer Rating: Summary: BRILLIANT! Comment: This is by far the best quality dvd we have seen yet. We've seen movies on blu-ray, but this just blows them out of the water. The picture quality is absolutely amazing! If you are investing in a blu-ray player, we would highly recommend this as a first blu-ray dvd purchase! Customer Rating: Summary: Great for a Blu-ray newbie Comment: Having just invested in Blu-ray technology I wondered what disc to start with. I thought natural history would be a sensible initial investment. I was not wrong. The HD of 'EARTH' certainly delivers and the colours and fine detail are worth the investment. I heartily recommend it. More Reviews
