Editorial Reviews: An unpredictable thriller, The Lookout stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Brick, Mysterious Skin) as Chris, a young man who had everything ahead of him--until a car accident killed two of his friends and left him with brain damage. Now reduced to being a janitor at a bank, Chris struggles to maintain some semblance of order in his life. When a guy he meets at a bar turns out to be an old classmate, Chris succumbs to his flattery, not suspecting that the guy's intentions are criminal. The Lookout was probably sold as Memento meets Inside Man, but its rewards are more modest than either. Though the plot is never obvious, the characters are never surprising--and in this kind of thriller, the payoff is when characters exceed what they (and the audience) believe they are. Still, the writing, acting, and directing are all solid, and from moment to moment the movie proves compelling. Jeff Daniels (The Purple Rose of Cairo) is particularly good as Chris's blind roommate, who smells a rat but can't persuade Chris to do something about it. --Bret Fetzer

Summary: A pointless film
Comment: Whilst I am no expert on head trauma, I was never fully convinced of the lead character's difficulties after his accident. They seemed to be used when it fitted the plot and forgotten about at other times. Also, would a person carrying a card saying - 'I have had a serious head injury and must not go up stairs' be allowed to drive a car?

Other issues - Isla Fisher's character didn't make any sense either, wasn't sure what her motives were. The bad guys seemed to be quite boring and cliched and as soon as a certain character starts talking about his new-born on the way, you can be sure what his fate will be.

The only thing this film has in common with Memento is the lead character writes notes occasionally, otherwise it's nowhere near the same league.

Summary: A Nice Surprise
Comment: This is an underseen little gem of a movie reminiscent of Memento and A Simple Plan and I would say any fan of either of those movies will find this well worth ninety or so minutes of their time. A very low key and unusual heist movie that builds to an engrossing climax this certainly deserves to be seen by more people. Joseph Gordon-Levitt looking uncannily like the late Heath Ledger in some scenes is definitely a star in the making. Glad I didn't miss this one!
