Summary: So So
Comment: I watched this on Sky last night, after reading the description I was expecting an 'American Psycho' style film. After watching it I can say in my opinion it is far inferior. Wisely the filmakers didn't follow that path to the letter because that would have been foolish. I just think the film would have been better without some of the unfeasible sub plot. Why for instance is there a parallel story involving another killer? He kidnaps Demi Moore midway through, then he bumps into her near the end and ends up killing himself. What was the point of having that in the film? It did nothing for the main story whatsoever. The bit about his daughter possibly being a serial killer was also absurd, as was the photographer asking Mr Brooks to teach him to kill rather than taking the incriminating photos to the police. Now, I'm not one for expecting films to follow reality as some of my other reviews will testify, but I just think it could have been a better film if some of those things were done differently or just not included at all. Full marks for the William Hurt part though, it certainly made the film more interesting. Overall, a just about over average film.

Summary: A surprisingly good film.
Comment: I have just watched this film on Sky and I have to say that it was excellent, far better than I thought it would be. Kevin Costner is definitely on form as a family man with a seriously dark side. I loved the interplay between his character and William Hurt who plays his alter ego (I guess). And seeing him training the new guy in the art of serial killing was also a treat. It was pretty obvious that this relationship was definitely not going to have a happy ending.

There were some interesting side issues. Particularly Costners daughter who may or may not be following in her fathers footsteps. Also Demi Moore, who I normally don't like, is great as the detective going through a bitter divorce.

The only uninteresting character is Costners wife who doesn't really say or do much of any significance at all.

It isn't, until the end that is, a particularly gory movie. I hate excessive blood and guts in a film so this pleased me. Only the last 10-15 minutes had me feeling a bit queasy.

I would say that this is an intriguing, intelligent movie and well acted. It was also quite funny, in a dark way, for a story about a serial killer and that is something you don't see often.

Summary: A cracking film
Comment: This is a really good movie. Costner is understated and suits the role perfectly. Most of the time it's well paced with only a couple of flat bits. William Hurt and Dane Cook are also excellent, particularly the odd relationship between Costner and Hurt that really works without resorting to the 'devil on the shoulder' cliche. Demi Moore is OK but her character never really develops.
Overall, a really good film that kept us hooked all the way through.

Summary: A good thriller
Comment: Mr Brooks is a slow burning thriller. Kevin Costner plays the protagonist who is a well respected businessman, husband and father with a secret addiction to killing and William Hurt plays the `voice in his head'. A good film with some great acting from Dane Cook an actor I've never even heard of before, for me his portrayal of the wannabe killer keen to learn from the expert made the film. As for Demi Moore's character!! OMG she is dreadful and I actually went off the film because her character was so typical and made me cringe, she is the stereotypical hardnosed female cop....expect lots of gum chewing and sentences with mother*cker in them. I can't describe how bad she is....there was no need to include her in a film that is trying to be dark and disturbing. Also the daughter story was a bit far fetched and again in my opinion didn't need to be included in the film. Overall Mr Brooks kept my attention and the premise is good but I wouldn't say it was the best film I'd ever seen. A good film...not fantastic.

Summary: Underneath the calm exterior lies.....
Comment: You may think "not another serial killer story" ,but this has a unique take on the topic.First,an inspired piece of casting puts Costner into the best role of his acting career.Second, the use of William Hurst as Costner's conscience, who voices throughout the movie what is in costner's head, and who is visible only to us the audience is a bit of pure genius.Third,Costner has a life as a very normal-seeming married, successful, local businessman.Immensely calm, poised, thoughtful,he is in no way a crazy.Yet he has been killing people and getting away with it for years. He is addicted to it.The film unfolds around this base into several directions-his daughter who quits school under a cloud;a guy who sees Costner at a crucial moment and wants to join Costner on his next kill;a pursuing cop(the only weak part of the casting as some idiot gave the part to Demi Moore).
The pace and tension are wracked up relentlessly as the story unfolds.
