There will be blood is just not that good.
Comment:
I so thought this would be a great movie, I am a huge fan of Daniel Day-Lewis and his acting in this
was superb as usual but what the hell was the point in this movie, because It did not raise one bit
of emotion in me. I am a reasonably inteligent man but I cant see what the fuss is about . This
movie had beautiful cinematography great acting but I just didn't care about any of the characters
at all. I cant help thinking that this has been hyped up without justification and that there is a
real sense of emperor's new clothes about this. The story was just dull. I kept waiting for the
moment of revelation that never came. If someone can explain the point of this movie I would be very
grateful because I cant see one. I think the real test of a great movie is being able to watch
again and again and get something out of it each time. I would rather watch a beautifully fimed
documentary about oil production in the early 1900s because it would have about as much emotion.

Modern American Masterpiece
Comment:
Well, first things first, I didn't think that I would come across a film that would have the same
impact on me when i watched Atonement. Boy was I wrong! Everything in this film is pure genuis on
Anderson's part. Stunning cinematography,acting,score,editing....everything that I want in a film
and more. An absolute masterpiece.
There Will Be Blood contains some intresting
idelogies about surburben America. Most notably an incredibly isolated one. But two that come to
mind are this Anti-Religious theme and Ant-capitalism. We see the character of Plaintiff, who feels
uncomfortable around Eli Sunday in relation to his evangelical preching. Daniel Day-Lewis' character
is one of a seriosuly repressed man, who wants no more than to own every oil enterprise in the
land.
What was so brilliant about this film, which I will probably say again was just
absolutly bloody everything. The score I will begin with. Made by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, who
for some starnge reason did not get an Academy award nomination for this, produces a score which
prefectly relates to the time period. The whole errieness of it and the detuning of the score, adds
to the bleak, corrupt atmosphere that we see on screen. Abolutly mesmeriszing. Something which I
have to buy very soon. Still have it in my head. So brilliant"
The film also contains
huge christian like imagery. For instance Plaintiff, is seen as deriving from hell, ie- we first
seen him down in the pit lookin for oil. From there we can see he is a violent, selfish man, who
is deterimined to get what h wants. From there on, when he takes the son of another man and poses
him as his own-also symoboloses this. There are loads more but I dodn't want to give too much away
as it's just blown me away!
Talking of "blowing me away" the cinematography. WOW oh
Wow! again I didn't think I would see should sensational cinematography since I watched Atonement
back in September. Again I was serisouly wrong. Throughout the film, the colour on the screen
changes from dark to seriously light. Again, possibly signifies the changing of mood. One oncredibly
piece of imagery is that scene where the oil place is on fire is unbelivably. The colours, is set
up perfectly for something spectactualer. I don't have the words to describe it but once you see it
you'll see what I mean.
Being a Scorsese fan, I can see hell of a lot of trademarks in
here that he uses. For instance the jump cuts in here, that he often uses. These, as I can see from
reviews have put people off and confused them a little. For me this is is beauty of the film. It has
certainly made be think about how much I take for granted everything told to me in the film. I mean
Anderson takes a chunk of vita nrrative information and doesn't tells us anymore. I loved this.
Seriouslyy people is a good thing you know. It's something that is original and not often used.
People wake up! Anyway, I loved some of the tracking shots in this, not quite beating Atonement but
still some unbeliveable scenes in it.
The acting...well just outstanding. Daniel Day
Lewis seriosuly pocess the inner-body of his character so well. The John Huston like voice,
mannerisms, e.t.c is just mind-blowing. If he doesn't win best actor at this year's oscars-I'l eat
my own hat!! I have to say Paul Dano is serisouly under-rated in this role. He brilliantly plays the
twin-brothers Eli and Paul so so well. I love his crazy preaching moment...but I can't go into that
much. Both actors, Dano and Day-Lewis have brilliant chemistry on screen which shows. I can't
understand why Dano hasn't been credited more with his role-only a BAFTA nomination. I guess his is
slightly over-shadowed by Day Lewis's performance.
Overall, the length of the film DOES
NOT matter, the jump cuts, DOES NOT matter, acting, score cinematograpy all contribute to a
sensational, outsanding film which words can't not express. I couldn't keep my eyes of it all the
way through, just annoyed me that I picked a crapy version but I will get it on DVD soon.

Go out and see it when you can, you wont be dsappointed. Ignore the negative comments here
because they're wrong!! There Will Be Blood gave me the same experience as I had with the brilliant
Atonement. One of utter admiration for the director and just all around Wownes...a word I made up
right there!

Mesmerizing
Comment:
I had never seen Daniel Day Lewis before There Will Be Blood, yes I know shocking, so I was more
than interesting in seeing this if only to see the man everyone loved so much and afterwards I can
certainly see why. I will be honest I feel a mere simpleton trying to deliver any kind of meaningful
analogy with regards to There will be blood, but if only for Daniel Day Lewis's performance I
thought I would try. Whether or not the movie grabbed me, I don't think so, but the leading man was,
well it was one of those performances that leave some people sitting there just mesmerized. If I
never see another movie with Daniel Day Lewis in it, I will still have enough to remember for this
one performance. I thought Brando In the Godfather was powerful but this was more intense, almost
relentless at times my only gripe here is that if you remove Daniel Day Lewis you don't have a
critically acclaimed "masterpiece" that's my view anyway. The only relatively well known actor here
is Daniel Day Lewis, his character is given by far the most screen time, obviously but it seems any
potential weaknesses the movie may have had the makers tried to cover by dumping the full weight of
this massive feature on one mans shoulders, luckily that man was Daniel Day Lewis so not a lot of
people have a great deal to complain about. For the record I am not a serial follower of Day Lewis,
I has never seen anything he had done beforehand, I am saying this simply to bring home the point
that besides his utterly engrossing masterful performance there was not a lot I could take from this
movie which tells the story of a silver miner turned oil man on a mission for power, during Southern
California's oil boom of the late 19th century and early into the 20th century. The other characters
are basically just there to serve their secondary functions, I mean if you replaced all of them save
for two, the son and the preacher Ely with different actors then I wouldn't really notice there is
one central character in this whole movie, who gives it its drive to call anyone else a "supporting
actor" is stretching it a bit, I may be off here but other than the lead, everyone else just shrunk
into the shadows and other than his son and one very annoying preacher left no real impact given how
little they appeared to be needed. This felt like a one man show, and that's my rather meaningless
criticism how can a movie be perceived as a masterpiece when it so heavily reliant on one actor to
pull it through, the ending or rather the scene right before it was very, very moving, sad and quite
powerful and NOT just for Day Lewis but up until then the only thing that ever struck a chord with
me as a observer, emotionally or otherwise was the PERFORMANCE of Daniel Day Lewis, the story was
interesting for me any way solely for the sheer... insert any word that can sum up the magnitude of
you know who's performance, the story for most parts, id say maybe 80 % or more never really gripped
me as I expected given the A list everything that went with this highly anticipated and critically
acclaimed movie. Put it this way, certain scenes which one would think should affect you in a
certain way don't, like a rather brutal scene at the climax which felt more like black comedy at its
finest than the end to the "Citizen Cane Surpassed" as one big paper said I think. There will be
Blood just feels rather empty at times, maybe because the characters are never fully explored
despite the fact its the best part of 2 and a half hours long, maybe because its hard to remember
anything else besides one truly (insert adequate word here) show from one man, I don't really know.
Certain parts of the story did grip me but for the most part it was considerably less involving than
many far less acclaimed and inevitably beloved pictures. For the final time, subtract one actor and
its curtains for there will be blood, but I can say with pleasing comfort that if you see this film,
that Oscar winning performance should grip you from the very opening seconds to the last shot, it
seems fitting that a film centered around one man should start and end on his characters terms, and
this alone makes There Will Be Blood a must see, anything else, and to plenty I am sure, there will
be other aspects that will make more of an impact to plenty than this single viewer. Go see it,
either way one-man show or not it's a very good watch.

Summary:
An American Classic
Comment:
If you're looking for subtlety then you're not going to find it in P T Anderson's There Will Be
Blood; from the grand scale locations to the larger than life characters, Anderson's film feels
truly epic. Yet don't take this as a fault of the film, indeed it is the films epic quality that
ensures its success. Loosely based on Upton Sinclair's novel Oil, There Will Be Blood tells the
story of Daniel Plainview (played by Daniel Day-Lewis). After Plainview accidently discovers oil
(and its monetary gains), he becomes set on sourcing further oil and thus gaining more wealth. After
a tip off in which Plainview is told of oil rich land in California, his greed ultimately leads to a
battle of wills between Plainview and Eli Sunday (Paul Dano, who also plays the small but pivotal
role of Paul Sunday) the young minister of a church, culminating in the almost comic final scene of
the film, as Plainview's greed ultimately consumes him.
Day-Lewis deservedly won an Academy
Award for his performance of a man entirely obsessed by greed, and indeed it is he on who the film
rests upon. His performance is startling, utterly embodying the enigmatic character of Plainview.
There is a distinct lack of character development, and whilst the audience is shown Plainview at the
beginning of his ascent we never truly learn his motives and feelings. However, the lack of
information that we have about the character ensures that the audience not only learns all they need
to know, but they are kept at a distance from this ultimately lonely figure. In fact there is no
dialogue for the first fifteen minutes of the film, in which we watch Plainview mining, working
entirely by himself.
The cinematography adds to the almost mystical quality of the film,
reminiscent of Terence Malick's Days of Heaven, which was shot entirely during magic hour.
Ultimately, this is an epic film showcasing the subversion of the American Dream, and deserves to be
remembered as a true American Classic.

Instantly you are in the mountains, a corridor closing in on you. Pasonified by the near oscar
winning music of Johnny Greenwood.
Look, i'm not a good reviewer but i know about film.
If i could just get it onto the screen i would tell you how enrapturing, oppressive, expansive and
emotionally massive this picture is!
Go and see it for yourself, none of you will be
dissapointed (apart from the under 12 A's)
