Subversion of the American dream? Who cares.
Comment:
One of the most unbelievably miserable films of all times, entertainment this ain't! Both me and my
girlfriend left the cinema initially stunned by the awfulness of what we had just watched and then
became thoroughly depressed as we trudged back home in the gloom. Were we depressed because we had
just wasted 3 hours of a Friday night, or because this bleak, relentless diatribe against humanity
which has garnered so many awards and lavish praise from both critics and public alike that led us
to believe that perhaps we've missed something here? Or maybe we hadn't because later we realised
that this long film does indeed have the ingredients for a classic epic - fine acting, a literate
script, wonderful photography and a portentous Wagner-esque soundtrack - that it dupes one into
believing that it must be a masterpiece. Indeed it has even be compared to the Godfather, Once Upon
a Time in the West and Treasure of the Sierra Madre - whose themes also revolve around obsessively
driven characters, in these instances the quest for power, revenge and riches respectively. However,
in contrast to those splendid films this is one you wouldn't want to see again. It completely fails
to engage. I can't believe that anybody, other than the most misanthropic of creatures, has enjoyed
this film, but, in the wake of all the hype you have convinced yourselves to give it the thumbs up
and rave about it in what can only be put down to as an epidemic of collective posturing.

Great Hype - Awful Film
Comment:
Without a doubt the most overhyped and disapointing film of all time. Hailed as the future of film
making, the film by which all others will be judged and already appearing in numerous "Top 10
Lists", this film quite simply does not deserve any such plaudit.
Day Lewis delivers a now
trademark over the top performance as a down on his luck oil prospector who strikes oil and strikes
it rich. Day Lewis tackles his part with the subtlety of a meat cleaver on a cheese board, his stock
in trade since Gangs Of New York.
The photography is okay,k however this does nothing to save
the film whiich appears to have been made without the benefit of a strong producer or the facility
of an editing suite.
Utter rubbish, don't waste your money, quite simply one of the worst
films of all time.

Awakenings
Comment:
This seems to be either a love it or a hate it film from the reviews i've read on here, i think all
good films require two viewings before you really know what you think about them, and i think this
especially needs time, it requires your attention, you cant just sit back with popcorn and a coke
and expect it to mould to you like your chair, it asks something from you.
A word of
warning, if you're used to fast paced computer games, will ferrell comedies, and pop music, chances
are (and this is by no means a definite) you arent gonna be so thrilled by this movie.
/>I loved it though, i found it highly emotional, challenging, it struck a chord with me - the
music, the story, the time it took, the courage it must have took to make it! daniel day lewis is
bloody brilliant, and you just dont find many films like this (which is probably why so many people
dont "get it")
So, take your time, dont make any noise with your wrappers and your
whispering (we can hear you no matter how quiet you think youre being), dont sit slap bang in front
of someone else (lets face it the cinema isnt going to be full so give others some space), and watch
it at the cinema!!!!! one of the few films made recently that needs to be seen in the cinema!

a classic film
Comment:
words just can't describe just how good this amazing film is. this has got to be about as close to
perfect as you can get. i get the feeling that if it wasn't for the coen brothers and no country for
old men, this would have swept the board at this year's oscars. daniel day lewis' performance in
this is so good, no other actor should have bothered turning up for the oscars. it would have been a
travesty if he had lost. it's the sort of performance that future actors will be studying for years
to come in drama school. some might find the film a bit slow, and indeed there's no dialogue for
around the first 15 or so minutes that can also put some off, but stick with it, and you will be
rewarded. absolutely magnificent. a classic.

Masterpiece.
Comment:
Brilliant film.
Unfortunately, the region 1 edition is packaged in a horribly flimsy
cardboard case. I sincerely hope that the region 2 will be an improvement, or else I won't be buying
it. When will they learn that we don't want our DVD's packaged in paper?
