Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Brave movie-making with a silly story Comment: Lets get down to brass tacks here. This movie has a cheap stage feel to it; it looks like it was shot in a studio. The plot is laugh-out-loud silly in places. The scenario whereby the Doctor (Tom Cruise) meets a prostitute on a street corner and goes back to her apartment because he intends to inflict revenge on his wife(Kidman). Earlier Kidman confessed to the good Doc that she has regular fantasies about cheating on him. Dr Tom is not pleased. Dr Cruise then leaves the hooker's appartment when his wife phones (nothing happens with hooker) and then Dr Cruise goes back to the same prostitute the following night (with flowers), and she in tears reveals she has just received bad news earlier that day in the form of HIV test result. This is dumb story telling by Kubrick. Clearly he was not thinking properly; we all know what the little pervert was thinking about...the crux of the movie. We have the crux of the movie - sex. People, as a generalisation, want mechanical sex and lots of it. The porn industry generates more $$$ than Hollywood. Serious business. Porn performers don't have to be beautiful, smart or talented; they just need to spend a lot of their time in genital contact. In itself this fact demands that we be eternally grateful for directors like Stanley Kubrick, for his fascination with everything but the act itself. Yes, our lives may never parallel Eyes Wide Shut but we can understand the potential that it represents. "I have seen one or two things in my life but never, never anything like this." Nick Nightengale (the piano player). As Freud said, "Every sexual encounter is actually between four people; we shall have much to discuss." And we shall, but first I must get the technical mumbo jumbo out of the way. Eyes Wide Shut is stunning to look at. Kubrick, of course, was a perfectionist who once described teamwork as "a bunch of people running around doing exactly what I say." And the result of that forceful hand was masterfully crafted films -- truly some of the most remarkable in history. That sentiment, and every book ever written about the man will attest to that fact, is apparent in every single one of his films. From Spartacus on down.
