Editorial Reviews:

Britain’s foremost multi-award-winning joke technician Jimmy Carr returns with his fourth live stand-up DVD, Jimmy Carr In Concert.

No-one writes sharper or meaner jokes and no-one delivers them better than Jimmy. He commands his audience with twisted little aphorisms - 'the sort of thing you might find in a fortune cookie baked by Satan' (Sunday Herald) - with no-one escaping his biting, withering sarcasm and take-no-prisoners approach to subject matter.

The release also includes a stack of exclusive DVD extras, including a specially commissioned 36-minute cartoon – a montage of Jimmy Carr’s most brutal audience putdowns – brought to life by Jimmy drawn in various different animated guises. Here we get to see Jimmy, amongst other things, as a life-sized puppet, Jimmy ‘cartoonised’, line-drawn and sketched Monty Python-style as he battles and belittles audience members who have dared to heckle!

Bonus Material
Carrtoons - a specially commissioned animated feature starring Jimmy Carr.
Carrtoons Comic Strip - nine bespoke cartoon comic strips.
Alternative subtitles – Australian, Glaswegian, Polish, Scouse and Welsh.

Summary: Jimmy Carr is brilliant
Comment: I'm a big fan of Jimmy Carr, I even went to this tour. If you like Jimmy Carr this is a must. He's come a long way from his first DVD and his delivery has only improved.

The extras are only OK. Probably more fun if you've never seen Jimmy Carr before. However if you went to his tour, you'll have seen a fair chunk of the Cartoon clips he does and the cartoon strips appeared in Nuts magazine as well as the programme for the tour. These cartoon strips are also very old jokes of Jimmy's.

It would get a 5 star review from me, but some of these jokes he does are repeated.

Summary: More miss than hit this time round...
Comment: I have now seen all of Jimmy's live DVD's, and this one I enjoyed the least. His first 2 are his best, and last years DVD showed his style taking a down turn! To his credit he does make each show a bit different. Here he has a Jazz band play while he spouts off his quips, and the long cartoon section at the end where he is drawn in different styles I found funnier than the actual show.

He has very little new to say here, and he gets most of the shows content from talking to his audience directly. He is very quick and clever with his replies as usual, but I would have liked it if he had more to say. He is in fact just relying on his audience and using them to cover and pad out for his lack of new and original material.

His delivery and style of material means we are used to his quips, which are getting less and less funny by the year. The Material he does cover is the same old same old too. I do admire him for his earlier work, but this is a poor show by those shows standards. Perhaps he should have waited a few years to think of some new material. We have had too much too soon of him. I feel he has had his day!

Summary: It's hard not to laugh...
Comment: This is a comedy DVD from a popular comedian with cleverly scripted material which borders on the offensive, and like many modern stand-up performers often goes for easy and obvious targets.

But with Jimmy it like picking a scab - you know you shouldn't do it - but you can't help enjoying it.

His timing, and his pace is faultless, and I particularly enjoyed his whimsical thoughts, which with the jazz trio and clouds of smoke seemed almost surreal.

There are not many jokes that you could repeat in polite company, but if you want those buy a joke book, or watch someone "safe" like Tim Vine.

This is a well crafted performance with lots of laughs - even if you feel a little guilty afterwards.
Well worth forking out for.

Summary: Great show and great extras
Comment: This is the 4th Jimmy Carr stand up DVD and it's just as good, if not better, than his previous titles.

Jimmy's interaction with the audience is more pronounced than previous shows - before it was a succession of one-liners, now there are far more put-downs and audience participation, which greatly adds to Jimmy's appeal.

Not only is the show very good, but the DVD extras are spectacular - the 40 min animated skit of various soundbites from Jimmy's gigs around the country is fantastic, and shows the man in great form. The Tutenkhamun gag towards the end is the best bit on the whole disc!

Another fantastic DVD from Mr Carr - definitely worth a look.

Summary: Business as usual for Jimmy
Comment: Jimmy Carr is the ultimate comedian. Nobody else can pull off so many one-liners, rip into hecklers or shave closer to the funny bone than Jimmy. Anyone with even a vague idea of how comedy works will appreciate just how good he is.

First a word of warning: this is not comedy for the easily offended. This is not family-friendly. As Jimmy himself states on the box: "It's rude, crude and offensive but those aren't the only reasons you'll enjoy it."
He's right, too: beneath the risque jokes and smutty humour is a comedic sensibility and intelligence handled by a professional whose tongue is sharper than he dresses. Jimmy knows what he's doing, knows how far he can push it, and takes great delight in seeing his audience squirm. In the hands of anyone else it would just fall apart.

It's hard to say whether 'In Concert' is better or worse than the rest of his DVDs. It's business as usual: some stand-up one-liners, some sit down read-aloud moments, audience participation: indeed, the only new thing brought to the table here is a spot of jazz midway through. Again, Jimmy admits that on the cover: "This DVD is exactly the same as last year's except every single word." Same format, new set.

And why should he change it? It's a winning formula. Rest assured, if you like Jimmy Carr, you'll be right at home here, and you won't be dissapointed. Brilliant.
