Editorial Reviews: Dr. Seuss's classic 1954 book Horton Hears a Who has entertained generations of children and served as the inspiration for a 26-minute, 1970 television special Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who and the 2000 Broadway musical "Seussical: The Musical". This 2008, full-length animated movie features the voice talents of Jim Carrey as Horton, Steve Carrell as the Mayor of Whoville, Carol Burnett as the Kangaroo, and Jesse McCartney as JoJo and promises to delight a whole new generation of children and their parents and grandparents. The technological wonders of computer animation have allowed 20th Century Fox Animation to bring to life the wacky, colourful Whoville with its minute inhabitants and the lush Jungle of Nool with its host of distinctive animals and the result is a rich, fantastical world of wonder worthy of Dr. Seuss' own imagination.

All the major plot elements of Dr. Seuss' book are present, with Horton hearing the faint cry for help from a tiny dust speck atop a small clover and doing his best to protect the inhabitants of that small civilization of Whoville despite the disbelief, disdain, and persecution of his fellow animals. The feel of Dr. Seuss' original rhyming prose is partially preserved in the sparse narration by Charles Osgood that's interspersed throughout the film's dialogue and the overarching themes of staying true to one's convictions and the celebration of the power of perseverance, imagination, and kindness come through loud and clear. Horton Hears a Who is a fun rendering of a classic Dr. Seuss story that's sure to entertain viewers of all ages. --Tami Horiuchi, Amazon.com

Summary: Fun, beautifully animated and with universal appeal!
Comment: This is a fantastic feature - not only is the animation incredible, but the humour is quirky, the dialogue snappy, and as an adaptation from Dr Seuss it's spot on. Adults and kids alike will be chuckling along, and it's hard not to fall in love with characters that have had so much attention paid to their every detail.

Enjoy it as a simple tale or as an allegory for something much deeper - either way, it's great, and even thought-provoking fun - pretty impressive for something many might dismiss as just a kids' film.

Summary: For once Jim Carrey is not too annoying!
Comment: Well I took my 2 boys to see this (aged 7 and 9) and they loved it. As a parent having to sit through this film with them, I too was entranced and thoroughly enjoyed a moment of pure Dr Seuss imagination gone wild! OK so Mr W.A.Ford did not like it, but with respect Mr Ford, the book and latterly film adaptation is meant for children and their vivid imaginations, so clearly it will not suit all adults.

My kids both want a copy of the DVD for Christmas, so Amazon to the rescue!

Summary: Simply wonderful
Comment: I am not usually a fan of animations but watched this for review purposes for a website. It is absolutely fantastic. Beautifully animated, perfectly cast and hilarious and touching in equal measure, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Summary: Colourful and fun for small children
Comment: "Horton" is a visually striking film - very colourful with plenty of slapstick humour to keep the kids amused - and the under 10's will probably enjoy this film most. There are one or two jokes in here for adults, but the lack of any real plot will mean your attention soon starts to drift. Mercifully it's a short film. Fine for what it is - a diversion for kids - certainly not a classic.

Summary: Visually striking Dr Seuss adaptation
Comment: This film tells the story of what happens when Horton the Elephant discovers there is an entire world contained in a speck on a bit of clover. Whilst the plot is squarely aimed at kids, there is much to recommend this to viewers of all ages; anyone who likes the books of Dr Seuss and/or decent animation should enjoy this film.
Visually, it manages to capture Seuss's style really well; the microscopic world of the Whos is especially entertaining and there are a great many incredibly detailed and inventive scenes that will amuse children and adults alike.
Whilst there are plenty of kids films that represent pure torture for grown-ups, this isn't one of them. It made me laugh as well as my kids so scores points for that. Jim Carrey isn't everyone's cup of tea either, but his vocal performance in this is fairly understated so shouldn't prove too annoying.
Overall, I'd say this is top notch family entertainment that has superb animation; I may not want to rewatch it quite as much as my kids will, but it's well worth a look.
