Summary: Not exactly Scorsese but a decent film
Comment: While this isn't going to erase any memories of Scorsese's finest work, this was pleasingly well-executed overall. Although ostensibly a gangster film, it has more to do with the relationship between three friends, with the mob working as a backdrop. The story doesn't exactly break any new ground, but neither did it feel become quite so cliched as descend into quasi-parody. At the time of viewing, I had not realised that the character who end up moving into the mafia to have been James Caan's son. However the similarity with his father was very noticeable and comes out favourably. Overall, it's well worth a rental, although not something to watch time after time. My main criticism would be with the rather hasty ending. After having taken a comfortable pace throughout, the more major events towards the end seemed rather bunched together. I would have expected a rather central focus upon these events, rather than a hurried conclusion.

Summary: Brooklyn obeys the usual rules
Comment: "Brooklyn Rules" is just one in a long line of similar films - "Mean Streets" through "Goodfellas" to "A Bronx Tale". Interestingly though the mob links are more of an undercurrent to the film rather than being it's raison d'être and the film makes no attempt to glamorize the role or lifestyle of the wiseguys although the resolution of one of the plot lines involving Prinze Jr falling foul of a local wiseguy was morally ambiguous.

The three leads (Freddie Prinze Jr., Jerry Ferrara and Scott Caan) are excellent and play off each other nicely. Alec Baldwin is suitably intimidating yet charming with it as Caesar Manganaro. Mena Suvari's role is underwritten though and her relationship with Prinze Jnr was not particularly believable.

The soundtrack to the film is excellent and enhances the 80's setting.

Brooklyn Rules isn't a bad film and it is certainly watchable but it lacks the novelty, dramatic impetus and freshness of the similar but superior "A Guide To Recognising Your Saints."

Summary: Entertaining in parts but there are so many better films than this
Comment: This film seems to take parts from other mob films and tries to paste them into one and it doesn't really work.

A few minutes into the film, it was already obvious that that this was going to be a dissapointment and to be honest a bit of a chore to watch. Parts of the film were ok and at times there were signs of what could have been a good film, but alas, it was not to be. The film seems rushed and casting probably took all of 10 minutes as most of the characters do not seem suited to their roles

If you have run out of decent mob movies to keep you going, this one might be worth a look...otherwise I suggest looking elsewhere for your fix

Summary: Cliched coming-of-age gangster movie
Comment: Considering the stars featured in this movie - Mena Suvari, Alec Baldwin and Freddie Prince Jr. to name three - I find myself being a bit disappointed after watching the movie in full, as it is incredibly cliched, and well, not that great. The film is set in the 80s, and uses stylistic devices used in Goodfellas, and other popular gangster movies, whilst feeling lighter and more insubstantial in plot, also borrowing from teen 'friend' movies and coming-of-age movies, but not really merging them all properly enough for the movie to be greatly watchable. I can't say I'd recommend this, unless out of a morbid curiosity or out of fandom for any of the main stars, but for those buying it on the premise of it being a gangster film, they'd be sorely disappointed.

Summary: Mildly entertaining...
Comment: I love my movies, but I just feel this one fell short. Firstly, the picture of Alec Baldwin is misleading he is only in the movie for a short period. However, it does have Freddy Prinze Jnr, and Meena Suvari. You may remember them from Scobby Doo and American Pie. Anyway, they are not enough to see this film through. There acting is ok, nothing great. The movie itself has been done sooo... many times. It's not your Godfather or Sopranos and if you've seen them. I advise you miss this altogther.
