Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Pretty poor, not worth it... Comment: I bought this from Argos and they told me it couldn't be returned, now I know why. Firstly the drawbacks. DAB reception is next to useless unless you're on top of a hill or walk along holding it in your hand (I've tested it in Northampton and London). The case is cheap and plasticky and beginning to mark after only a few weeks wear. Volume is to low if you're walking next to a busy road and you'll need noise cancelling headphones. Everything else is fine. As an mp3 player tracks are very easy to transfer and apart from the volume sound quality is pretty good. The voice recorder is better than my Sony mobile phone, which isn't saying much, but is fine for taking notes. So while I'm not bitter, I've got a knockabout mp3 player for the gym and fortunately I live on a hill, I would advise people not to buy this, certainly not for its DAB radio. Customer Rating: Summary: Superb Item!! Comment: Firstly i'd like to tell anyone thinking of buying this product (Like i was) to completely ignore the bad reviews. I bought this product yesterday and it's absolutely brilliant! The earphones deliver high quality sound and the radio reception is superb. The benefit of DAB digital radio is that you get to choose from many different radio stations not always available on normal FM or AM radio. The Radio easily connects to your computer via USB cable and instead of having to convert all of the music from your cd's to MP3 this Phillips radio also plays WMA tracks. I just put my cd's into the computer and ripped the music to the MP3 player. I was a bit worried about buying it in case the stories about bad radio reception my friend had told me about with portable DAB radios was true. Wherever i've used this unit the reception and sound quality has always been top notch. I usually listen to music on my phone but not anymore. Now i always listen to music on this. Even if you're not a massive music fan i strongly reccomend you buy one of these. It gives you excellent music quality,Brilliant radio reception and great value for money. Comment: I bought the upgraded DA1103 (from Comet) and don't recognise most of the problems.I paid £29.95 which I consider to be reasonably good value. If feels solid and good quality. It still uses 2-AAA batteries, but I've found they last quite well if you use alkalines. I bought it to listen to radio on my frequent coach trips from Somerset to Shepherds Bush (QPR). Yesterday, despite our terrible performance and result against Derby, the radio performed well on the coach trip back via M4/M5 and I could listen to several stations clearly all the way. It was not so good on the trip down via A303, but this route has poor reception on all radios I've tried (BBC earn your licence fee by improving this). It exceeded my expectations in this regard and if you do lose stations you have the option of listening to your music on the MP3 player. I would agree that the problems are due to transmission rather than the radio, but I was happy with what I got and would recommend it. Improvements: 1) Include FM reception 2) increase MP3 capacity to 2.0 gig or allow it to accept plug-in USB memory sticks. Customer Rating: Summary: * A Very Satisfied Philips DAB Customer! * Comment: First off, I have read all the previous reviews regarding this product cant seem to work out where all the negativity is stemming from. I purchased mines today. I bought it to use when I'm out walking so I picked this as an ideal DAB radio to listen to while I walk. I can honestly say that I am very pleased with both the purchase and my product. In less than 10 seconds it had picked up and stored around 40 digital radio stations while I was sitting in my car before I went out for my walk! I didnt even have to read the instructions as the button system is pretty much self explanatory. The unit itself is pretty compact compared to other 'portable' DABs I have used. It slotted nicely into the inside of my tracky top and the earphones were surprisingly comfortable and made the sound very crisp clear. I use the MP3 1GB space for some songs or an audio book and find that 1GB is more than sufficient for my needs. I havent used the MIC function and probably wont as I have no real need for it but its always there just in case the need arises. I rarely listen to FM nowadays as I can listen to DAB stations from all around the country so DAB was my ideal option for a portable radio. Overall its a simplistic portable DAB unit that, in my opinion, is very slick and sexy, easy to use and is worthy of the quality of Philips. Which is why I rated it 5 Stars. I've read some reports about DAB radio, and all I can say is that the technology is still in its early stages so some glitches are bound to be present, especially the signal difference between analogue and digital reception, which is where I believe most of the negativity is coming from. All-in-all I'd say the tech industry is doing a good job of it especially philips. I've tried a few other portable dabs, namely the Ministry of Sound unit with the 3 silicon skins (also another good unit may I add, good quality and good selection of stations as well although a bit bulkier than this unit and uses 2 AA batteries so is alot thicker). The other unit I tried was the Alba Portable DAB/MP3 player, I quickly got rid of that one as the reception was terrible although its small form factor and single AA battery was ideal, if the reception was good then I'd have hit the jackpot but alas it was not to be. I'm very happy with this Philips portable DAB unit and will be keeping a hold of it for the forseeable future until the technology advances a bit. My advice? I recommend this unit to anyone based on my experience with the unit. All I would say is to look at what you need and why you need it before rushing out to buy something only to be disappointed after buying it, failing that you can always buy it, evaluate it and if its no good, then sell it on! Customer Rating: Summary: Annoying faults Comment: Bought this DAB portable radio and found that the reception on many channels was poor. When storing preset stations and then selecting them, the radio would play a different channel to the one selected! It is easy to accidently press the scan button only to find you have lost all your stored stations. The battery life is very poor so use rechargeabe ones but need to charge each day by removing them and placing in a seperate charger! Would not buy another one. More Reviews
