Summary: Excellent live performances plus historical footage
Comment: Some of the great country singers from early 90s give powerful live performances. Voices especially harmonies wonderful - e.g. with stars like Emylou Harris, Tricia Yearwood and Suzy Bogguss singing backing vocals to Mary Chapin Carpenter it has to be special. The DVD is part documentary and part focused on one live gig. The archive clips of women singers pre-WWII make you realise where we've come from (and how far we've come) - comments by dozens of performers past and present are touching and revealing about the central role of women in the evolution of country music. Maybe I'm a biased male, but to me the best performers by far in the current country music scene are women (I'd go further - most of the current male singers are pathetic in comparison). To balance that polemic - should add that the backing musicians for the live gig are very good indeed, and all are male.

My few reservations about the DVD focus on choice of material - e.g. Tricia Yearwood is a great singer but her solo song is not a great choice. I didn't like Tammy Wynette's version of the great Everley Brothers balad Crying in the Rain (it badly needed a harmony vocal - wonder why she didn't have that when so many great voices around).

Mary Chapin Carpenter is awesome. Pam Tillis song 'call me Cleopatra - queen of denial' is a gem. Emylou Harris also great. And the atmosphere - especially the bond between the performers at the event - is very moving indeed.

Sound quality for the live performance is of course superb, as is picture quality. The arhcive documentary material is inevitably of mixed quality, but well edited - kind of Discovery Channel style.

A great DVD.
