Editorial Reviews: In 1990, Texas bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughan was just emerging from a long period in which drugs had taken their toll: the previous year's In Step album was the first he had made "clean", and the results were a marvel. But then, after sharing a stage with Buddy Guy, Robert Cray and Eric Clapton, he boarded a helicopter to Chicago. It crashed and the career of one of the great blues guitarists was ended.

Rewind to 1983 and here is Stevie Ray at the beginning of his fame, his first album with his backing band Double Trouble, Texas Flood, having just been released to critical and popular acclaim. The venue is the El Mocambo club in Toronto, a dark, smoky joint with a laid-back but appreciative clientele. Vaughan, drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon share the tiny stage. The guitarist, bedecked in trademark hat and alligator-skin boots, is pale of complexion, sweating from the heat and physical exertion, and physically much smaller than Shannon, who towers over him. But Vaughan dominates, as much by the magnetism of his flamboyant personality as his guitar playing. And what playing: by turns fiery, funky, then limpid and surprisingly graceful. Here is an authentic blues artist captured in the throes of living through his music. At this early stage in his career he was still very much in thrall to Jimi Hendrix (the flower-power shirt gives it away), as covers of "Voodoo Chile" and "Third Stone from the Sun" (the latter a Hendrix-inspired guitar-abuse session) indicate. The highlight of the show, however, is his rendition of "Texas Flood" which turns out to be an amazing essay on the art of blues guitar. This is a raw, intimate and spontaneous record of a one-off event. All fans of the blues will be grateful to those who had the foresight to capture it on film.

On the DVD: The disc allows the viewer to chose a lyrics on/off option, as well as different audio mixes (Dolby Surround or Stereo). There's also a short interview with Double Trouble's Clayton and Shannon, recorded in 1999, in which they reveal that Stevie never bothered with a set list, and a biography, discography and timeline. --Mark Walker

Summary: Incredible. Please buy this DVD
Comment: This is quite simply one of the finest live performances I have ever seen, if not the finest!

If you have never seen or heard SRV please buy this as it is quite
exceptional. It's so good I don't really know where to start. Stevie was a true guitar genius.

He never stops yet never repeats himself. It's sublime - the power, the speed, the control, the sensitivity and the voice. He had it all and music is the poorer for his passing.

Texas Flood may be the greatest single performance ever captured on film.
I should think the few hundred people in attendance that night have never stopped telling people they were there!!

Summary: A stampede of sound
Comment: I came across this DVD a few days ago whilst nosing through one of my (virtual) neighbours reviews. It was a good review - very persuasive. I bought the DVD and I'm glad I did. Lots of energy and passion spent in wringing the blues out of a battered guitar. And I do mean *wringing*. At one point Stevie Ray has his guitar by the throat and seems to be throttling the music out of it. I've never seen a more abused looking instrument. That guitar has been intimate with Blues - no doubt about it - that guitar has suffered! The sounds produced are authentic, soul-wrenching blues. And rock that rocks. Stevie Ray Vaughan looks, at times, as though he's giving birth to the music - pushing it out, painfully, against strong resistance, through a narrow opening. The strain on his face, the sweat, the effort, the determination, the triumph: It's intense, a tremendous and moving performance.

I'll listen to this again and again.

Summary: WHAM!
Comment: Lest you should ever forget what rock 'n' roll was originally all about, and what it still IS meant to be all about, check out this eye-popping performance from a young and unknown Stevie Ray Vaughan in a small bar in that well-known epicentre of Rock 'n' Roll fable, Toronto.

The guitar playing world in 1983 was heading in two directions: electronic buffoonery of the worst order from the likes of those dolts Satriani and Vai, and the "energy and raw power" school of thought, populated by idiots who couldn't play their instruments and didn't understand any better what this wonderful medium is all about. Oh, it makes me so ANGRY to even think about it.

So exactly what Stevie Ray Vaughan and his merry men thought they were up to, in that sort of context, is anyone's guess. But, frankly, who cares? Let's just be grateful for these small shafts of brilliant light, whatever their provenance.

From the first second of the show, shimmying in from stage-left, Stevie pulverises the stage, his instrument and his face and bedazzles the crowd with the most gut-wrenching sonic assault I have ever seen or heard. Outstanding though most of his studio albums may be, you have no idea - really, none - of the energy - the man's sheer brute strength - the power of Stevie Ray Vaughan's playing until you see it unfold before you, even on a slightly tinny DVD. And WHAT he plays is inconceivably brilliant. You will shake your head in wonder.

Hendrix, the great deconstructor himself, is pulled apart limb from limb and ghoulishly re-arranged like the victim of some crazed serial killer. Lonny Mack is gunned down the straight like an over-powered dragster. SRV's wife Lenny is eulogised, sweat cascading down face, as the man gets through a whole smoke in one go without taking it out of his mouth. Even if you don't like his music the DVD is worth getting simply for the man's legendary facial expressions, and the marathon take on Texas Flood will do you till Tuesday week. You should just SEE the looks on the faces of those lucky Canadians in the audience.

Truly, TRULY outstanding.

Summary: PASSIONATE INTENSE TEXAS BLUES FROM A STRATOCASTER MASTER
Comment: Anyone who knows the tragically late, lamented SRV's music will know that it was straight out of the Texas Blues tradition. Brimming with machismo and straight ahead tales of deception and cruelty, his songs and his voice left you under no illusion - he'd been to Tin Pan Alley, and it was the roughest place. What completely wells me up to this day is watching him play Lenny - With 100%, intense devotion to his music, sweat pouring down his face at the end of a dazzling 'energetic' set (to say the least), he pulls up a chair, sits down, and just plays the most beautiful melodic, mysterious piece of sublime guitar you'll hear this side of Hendrix. Even his good pal Eric Clapton would marvel at this guy's devotion and ability. It's also a must for anyone who likes the sound of a great blues band belting out Texas-style blues... the place just rocks. You may want to see his later performances, and compare this 1983, raw, un-confident, messed up on booze coke-and-junk outlaw, with the cleaned up, rehabbed and focussed blues 'star' he eventually became before his death - and to say that is no criticism of him at all - but this performance will probably haunt you the most... simply masterful.

Summary: Unmissable
Comment: Don't miss out on this unbelievable performance from the greatest blues guitarist that ever lived except for maybe bb king, Buddy Guy and Jimi Hendrix who in my opinion were at the same standard. Stevie is at his best on this dvd and is not afraid to show off his skills such as when he plays the guitar behind his back above his head and even by dragging it along the floor. The set is made up as it goes along which gives the performance that extra natural feel. Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton also insight into the life and pastimes of Stevie which should not be missed. In my view you should buy it and cherish it.
