Summary: Whats there is great, BUT: missing big segments of their history!
Comment: Up until now the Classic Artists series had been almost without fault. They have produced in-depth documentaries of the histories of Cream, The Moody Blues and Yes, with contemporary interviews that offered candid insights into their careers. There was little or nothing of any significance that was not at least touched upon. The Yes documentary clocked in at 3 hours or so.

This is sadly not the case with Jethro Tull. While still a good quality documentary and definitely essential for any Jethro Tull fans video library, there are gaping holes in the bands history that are not discussed at all. Most dissappointing is that some of the 'progressive rock' and all of the 'folk-rock' years are glossed over or simply ignored. War Child, Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses, Stormwatch and Broadsword And The Beast have gone missing. The last two decades of the band's work are mostly ignored as well.

Even though this documentary covers what it does in nice fashion, these glaring omitions are ruinous to a program that claims to tell the story of a band that has a 40-year history of shifting styles and musicians. Justice has not been served here.

I was really hoping for more great programs, perhaps on the likes of ELP, Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones, etc., etc., but now I'm not so sure. I'd rather not be disappointed like this again.

Summary: "Spin me down the long ages....."
Comment: I placed my order on a Thursday and received this DVD the following Monday. It arrived in excellent condition. As a first time customer from the States, I'm VERY impressed with the service I received from Amazon.UK....
Now for my humble review of this most excellent documentary on the BEST band in the known Universe and Beyond.... Jethro Tull!!!!!
A comprehensive overview of the bands beginnings up to the present has been a long time coming. I've been a fan since hearing "Life Is A Long Song" on the radio when I was in High School. I was hooked from that point on. The first album I bought, with money I made from a paper route (delivering newspapers in the neighborhood), was Aqualung when it first came out. It's hard to believe that 40 years have passed since Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull started their journey and burst, headlong, onto the music scene. They have left their mark on music and will, undoubtedly, go down in history as a band who changed the face of music forever with a highly original sound and style of music which is hard to categorize. This was, and is, their genius and, more importantly, the genius of Ian Anderson. Ian IS the man! Without Ian, there would be no Jethro Tull. This is made, evidently clear, as you watch this compelling, engrossing, and very entertaining documentary. It stands up to repeated viewings and was well thought out from the packaging to the presentation. The accompanying booklet is very well put together as well as highly informative. The key players involved in the band are all here. I am slightly disappointed that Jeffery Hammond Hammond wasn't part of the video interviews. He states in his essay that this was due to his being too shy to go on camera. Fair enough. I respect his decision not to be interviewed but it would have rounded things out nicely if he would have been included. Still, you do get his thoughts, in print, on Ian and Tull during his time as a member of the band. I was hoping this would have been more on a par with the Beatles Anthology and covered every album in depth, which the Beatles Anthology actually didn't do. But they did mention all the albums they recorded, if memory serves.
I suppose there wasn't any footage available, but it would have been really great to see them at work in the studio for some of the albums, especially Thick As A Brick, A Passion Play and Warchild. As a musician this is of interest to me. Actually, I would have liked to see them talk, in depth, about each and every album. Where ideas came from, what inspired the songs, the album covers etc. Still, this is small critcism and excusable since this is the story of how Jethro Tull came to be, the highs and lows and everything in between, on their journey spanning the past 40 years to the present day. There is no living in the past here. This is their story, in their own words. I gave this 5 stars for being an honest, revealing, enlightening and, at times, unsettling account of this amazing, enigmatic, highly original and extremely remarkable band! I, for one, was very pleased with the effort. I don't think we can ask for more.

Summary: Excellent package, but with some reservations.....
Comment: Agreeing strongly with the other reviewer here who gave this 2-Disc set 4 stars, I was eagerly awaiting this release on the complete history of one of my favourite bands. The brand new interviews with all Tull associates over the years (plus great sleeve notes from IA and Jeffrey Hammond) are very informative and the history of the band from their formation through to "A Passion Play" is superb. This covers the first hour of the documentary. However, it is after this that the program becomes very patchy.

The late 70s 'Folk Tull' era is nearly totally ignored, as are other worthwhile important albums in their career ("Broadsword and The Beast") and the whole post "Crest Of A Knave" era (ie almost the last 20 years) too. The selection of live footage is also slightly limited and the continuing band line up changes documented in the sleeve notes are technically wrong in some parts - Jeffrey Hammond Hammond was most certainly on "Minstrel In The Gallery", not the sadly missed John Glascock.

As a dedicated Tull fan these are minor, but slightly frustrating quibbles as the whole set is worth it for the hours of fresh interviews (extended greatly on the 2nd disc) and certainly for the half hour German documentary from 1969 also on the second disc. It's fascinating how the other members perceive Anderson and one is left to judge fairly on his authoritative nature when guiding Tull. However, 4/5 is an accurate judging on this set, as the errors and left out parts of Tull's long and incredible career are inexcusable. I also find the disc holders, a bizarre jewel case clip on/in thingy unusable.

Summary: Switch on the Tullivision and enjoy this beaut!
Comment: I have to initially respectfully disagree with one of my fellow reviewers; I think the packaging for this looks a wee bit cheap; the sort of thing done for lots of other bands in a series, so I was quite suprised to watch all of this in one go and really enjoy it. The interviewees come across honest, and it is interesting to see what ex-members of the band think of their previous boss and ring-master, one Ian Anderson. Some of the stories (the shadey sacking of Glenn Cornick in 1970 and the equally shadey sackings of Barrie Barlow, David Palmer and John Evans... is a picture of Mr. Anderson's management techniques coming apparent here?) are dealt with head on and if there is still any anamosity, it is on display without any further malice. Dee Palmer (previoulsy David Palmer) make the price of this dvd worth while alone; she is very funny and insightful and much of the goings on in the band come into sharp focus when she speaks.

Weirdly, the Songs from the Wood/ Heavy Horses period is totally overlooked (as is War Child), but the depth of other periods is done with such detail, one can overlook this. This is a wonderful insight into one of Britain's most innovative and original bands. Ian Anderson projects himself well and other notable interviewees are Dave Pegg (always a funny boy) and John Evans who was interviewed 15 years back for a 25 anniversary VHS and came across as the sort of uninteresting nutter one would wish to avoid at all costs. He now seems a delightful fellow and totally honest with the past and his feelings ablut the past in the present. Terry Ellis (the band's manager and Chrysalis' founder) is also of note and one wonders what planet he is now on. Watch this dvd, you'll see what I mean...

An extra feature is the 1969 documentary, which is grainy in parts, funny and insightful in others and reminiscent of Bad News Tour (see the Comic Strip Presents... dvd) when all the band members are 'called for' while the camera films it all. Everyone looks pretty wooden, but in a very entertaining way. Yes, we meet Mr. Anderson (Snr) his wife, and a quainter way of showing two parents trying to understand how society and their own son was changing in the late 60s I have yet to see.

The future will see bands such as Tull as of huge historical interest, so a documentary of this depth and scope such as this is of great value, both now to fans and in years to come to fans and music historians. Well done who ever is behind it. It comes from this reviewer, highly recommended.
