Quite Good contest & DVD - Shame no Blu-ray
Comment:
The Eurovision Song Contest 2008 DVD comes on 3 discs:
* The Semi Final 1
* The Semi Final 2
* The Grand Final.
The 2 semi-finals and grand final are presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic format, though some features on the discs are presented in a 4:3 ratio - eg. the "Local Performance" sections (except for one of the local performance songs which is in non-anamorphic w/s). The discs in the case are placed on top of each other, rather than in separate sections - I'm not sure if this will protect the discs enough.
It comes on 3xDVD9s, with a duration of 485 min, is not region coded and is in PAL format. It includes Dolby 5.1 and Dolby Stereo.
This is first contest with 2 semi-finals. The contest itself is quite good, there are more songs than previous years (particularly with the additional semi-final, though there are probably fewer good songs than in some other recent years). As usual there is no option to hear the local commentary that is on the broadcasts.
Picture Quality:
The picture quality could be slightly better than last year, though there is still some blocking and some dark green blocks/noise in darker areas. Songs with flashing stage lighting and fast camera movement also show more compression artefacts, though there are also artefacts surrounding the stationary country text. The quality isn't too bad though (and at least the contest & semi-finals are in anamorphic wide-screen rather than non-anamorphic). It's a shame no Blu-ray was produced as it is capable of a higher data rate, resolution and functionality (eg. Blu-ray should allow playlist creation), as, like the 2007 contest, this was recorded and broadcast in high definition.

Comment:
I was on the Eurovision Song Contest in the Arena. It was the best Esc so far. I hope this DVD release will be great as well. 12 points for the organisation, music, Beogradska Arena, fans, Belgrade and everything else.
Great Job Serbia.
