Editorial Reviews: Cher's recording career has long taken a back seat to her acting pursuits, but with Believe she has come back with a vengeance as a throbbing disco diva. Although no fewer than five producers with dance pedigrees are along for the project (including Todd Terry, Junior Vasquez and Rob Dickins--who helped resurrect Rod Stewart's ailing career), this is by no means a dance album in the 1990s trip-hop sense of the term. Rather, it's a tour de force that summons mid-1970s images of strobe-lighted dance floors, sequinned miniskirts and writhing bodies. In "Power", Cher wails, "Ain't nothing changed much through the years". Not a bad thing in this case, since Cher's star was still rising in the steamy 1970s and '80s with a string of hits that included the disco gem "Take Me Home" and the haunting "If I Could Turn Back Time". Although not blessed with much vocal range, Cher knows how to work a song with her trademark sultry, slightly ironic delivery, and she's certainly in fine form on the masterful title track. --Jaan Uhelszki

Summary: A deserved triumph
Comment: It is not a mystery why this disc was as successful as it became. Nine years after its initial release, the songs sound as fresh and enticing as they did when I first listened to it. The program is full of pulsating dance numbers: "Believe," "Strong Enough," "All Or Nothing." Cher reworks one of her moderate hits from the late 1980s, "We All Sleep Alone," into a beat-driven disco song. And "Dov'e L'Amore" is a song reminiscent of her Snuff Garrett days, appropriately modernized.

Cher's continuing ability to realign herself in center stage after a period of relative dormancy proved undiminished when "Believe" hit the airwaves. More importantly, it made people more aware of Cher's musical standing: She outlasted 99% of her contemporaries from the early '60s and her ability to entertain only grew as time passed. More than ever, we need to be reminded that its okay to have fun and there's no better person to remind us of that than Cher.

Summary: Strong Enough to rock the world
Comment: The first time I heard Cher's powerful wall-piercing vocal STRONG ENOUGH on the radio, I told myself I'm going to miss the 70s goodness of disco and gayness if I don't dump my then heartbreaking relationship and move on with my life...

DO YOU BELIEVE IN LIFE AFTER LOVE? Yes, for the sake of survivors, Cher will always be a grand guidance figure to shelter us from the cruelty of love when it leaves you bleeding.

Despite of a few critically too cliche-sounding disco tracks, I gave 4 stars to the bold release of this record and insist "this is the (curing) album for the lonely" and hurt.

P/S: The CD sleeve printing is a platinum pearl-like silverish blue which adds the disco feel to this album. I actually bought it twice for an original German copy to replace the "duller" local edition in my country Malaysia.

Summary: Only Cher Could Pull This Off
Comment: "Believe" was one of those instant classic songs that defied modern trends by turning an early 80's dance theme into a late 90's monster hit. It's a powerful song and only the brilliant producer Junior Vasquez could produce such a hit. However, the remaining songs are a disappointment, showcasing Cher's amazing voice, but lacking originality. "We All Sleep Alone" is a pleasant soulful rendition that closes the CD, but the middle sounds like the filler that it is. However, only Cher could take ten songs to sell a huge album, just by her own tenacity and talent. Having the one gigantic hit doesn't hurt either. It's worth buying the album just for this song. If you really only want this song, the CD single has so many dance versions, it fills an entire CD.
