Summary: Reminiscent of the film - does it stand alone, though?
Comment: "The Shawshank Redemption" is a superb film and this soundtrack evokes many memories from it. However, unlike other Thomas Newman soundtracks such as "Road To Perdition" and "American Beauty", this one can be difficult to listen to simply because it contains fewer "whole" songs and many more snippets of incidental music to go with events in the film itself. Of course, this is the purpose of a soundtrack and Thomas Newman maintains the main musical themes throughout but I'm not convinced this works as a stand-alone album. Without the images, the music is a little too disjointed to provide satisfying listening.

Summary: Excellent soundtrack to a remarkable film!
Comment: Frank Darabont's adaptation of Stephen King's short story is one of the greatest movies of all time, and a major contribution to it's success was Thomas Newman's atmospheric Oscar nominated score.
The overall feel of this set is melancholy and thoughtful, a perfect description of Tim Robbin's central character Andy Dufresne! However, both the 'Stoic Theme' and in particular 'End Titles' are two of the most noble, uplifting and memorable pieces of music ever written for the big screen. Both are regularly used as backing tracks in trailers for other films (the trailer on commercial radio for Brokeback Mountain being one example).
The inspired use of 'The Marriage of Figaro', as played over the prison tannoy by Dufresne, is included along with the lightweight but amusing 'Lovesick Blues' by Hank Williams, a massive Stateside hit in 1949.
If you loved the film and enjoy soundtrack albums this is a must have.

Summary: A CD that enables you to reminisce about a magnificent film!
Comment: The cd enables you to conjure in your mind the very images of the movie the songs were accompanying. Atmospheric and emotional, the oppression of the prison is captured in track 3: Shawshank Prison(Stoic Theme) and the tragedy of Brooks in track 7. You can feel the triumph of Andy's escape and the new chapter Red must face in his life as he embarks to find Andy.

This is a superb compilation which succeeds where many soundtracks have failed, for it includes all the essential tracks that created the very mood and essence of this truly amazing film.

Even if you have not seen the movie this is a superb compilation of original instrumental, classic opera and popular music which can be appreciated for simply what it is, great music!
