Editorial Reviews: "Stuck in the Middle With You" and "You Never Can Tell" now induce indelible visual images that have little to do with Steealer's Wheel and Chuck Berry their respective creators. They've been co-opted (and, some might argue, corrupted) by Quentin Tarantino, arguably the most music-savvy of 1990s filmmakers. The soundtrack to Tarantino's Jackie Brown is heavy on '70s R&B (Bobby Womack, Brothers Johnson, Bill Withers, Minnie Ripperton) studded with oddities (Johnny Cash singing "Tennessee Stud," a track from blaxploitation queen/Jackie Brown star Pam Grier), and snatches of hardboiled dialogue. --Steven Stolder

Summary: Superlative compilation album

This is, bar none, the best compilation album I've ever come across. I'm shamed to admit I was unfamiliar with many of the tracks and artists until I saw the film. In hindsight I now understand the magnitude of the gaping whole this was in the development of my muscial appreciation. A vista of 70's soul-funk really opened up for me post-Jackie-Brown.

Summary: Underrated
Comment: Much like the film, the soundtrack to Jackie Brown is criminally underrated. Possibly due to the fact that Pulp Fiction is almost perfect, possibly because people expect more surf music and uber quotable dialogue on the CD. This is QT's Blaxploitation film and that's reflected in the music in a big way. If you're into that kind of thing, it's a good collection of 70's funk, soul and a few oddities like Johnny Cash's "Tennesee Stud" and "Detroit 9000". The only real flaw is Pam Grier's "Long time woman" which sounds very much like an actress singing.
Give the dialogue a chance and it's very cool, laid back and you might even find yourself murmering "if you know Beumont..."and so on. The same goes for the music, it's a grower, trust me.

Summary: Not The Best, But Still Worth Buying
Comment: This by far is not the best soundtrack to co-inside with the work of Tarantino to date. The dialogue from the film is not as self contained as that of his earlier works and as for the music, the cool factor associated with Tarantino has well and truly died here. Having said that, the music is bearable and for people that liked the movie it's definitely worth buying. And you can do much worse for your money, (however, if you're not Hell Bent on buying this soundtrack I suggest you skip it and buy the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, MUCH better!!!)

Summary: A groovy soundtrack to take you back to the film
Comment: The fitst time I played this soundtrack I was a little disappointed, although I have seen the movie hundreds of times, the soundtrack just seemed a feeble reminder. I did give it time though, and it really grows on you. As with the Pulp Fiction soundtrack there are small excerpts from the film, which add to the enjoyment/amusement factor, although don't play it in front of your granny! Excellent CD.

Summary: Another funky, fun Tarintino soundtrack
Comment: This album at first glance is not appealing at all, and in many respects is a great dissapointment when compared to its predecessors. It lacks the completness of the Pulp fiction and Resovoir dogs soundtrack. This however soon diminishes when you listen to the album, it grows on you! Tracks stand out like 110th street, Midnight Confessions and Strawberry letter 25. Its also nice to sit back and listen to the almost comedy tracks such as Tennesse Stud. The soundbites are also a trademark of the tarintino sountrack and this doesn't dissapoint, with super cool Samuel L. Jackson and the skitish De Niro they divide the album up nicely.

All in all I recomend this to anyone who has the previous tarintino soundtracks, however like the movie it is not as good as it could have been.
