Editorial Reviews: Although not exactly an experiment, this first Babylon 5 TV movie would pave the way for the three that followed (Thirdspace, The River of Souls, and A Call To Arms). Everything about it had to be bigger. For Christopher Franke this results in cues where you really can hear something of his orchestra for a change. Creator Strackzynski apparently insisted he "break our hearts"--this being a sad reflection of how wars can start, and the tragic early losses that occur. "The War" will demonstrate Franke's response to that--a touch of James Horner's favourite pipes here, and some harp glissandos there. But the let-down of this particular score is in its presentation on the album. Right after a nice "heart-breaker" you get the harshly abrasive scratching of military snares intoning the arrival of warships ("The Battle Of The Line"). The merging of cues into suites works fine on the other TV movie albums, and even better on the two original collective volumes. Here it gets in the way when two different voices--war-as-tragedy/war-as-glory--have equal amounts to say. --Paul Tonks

Summary: The most emotionally moving piece of music I've ever heard.
Comment: This has got to be the most emotional music I have, and am ever likely to have. When Christopher Franke and JMS come together you get a force to rock your emotions. This has to be the saddest music he has composed in the series and in my opinion the best. If you are a B5 addict like me, or if you have seen the film, or if you are a deep person who likes to contemplate what its all about you won't be disappointed. "The War" with the Irish bagpipes and the harp playing in the background really does take you there, to that last stand in a far away place.
