Summary: Amazingly refreshing
Comment: I first heard this music in Sweden at a party and it was the first time I have ever seen a party
come to a halt. Even the people who were talking loudly hushed to take on board the uniqueness of
the sound.

It is without doubt the best album of its type to have been released since the 1970's.
The raw sounds mixed with the often the non-well known or understood Cuban culture is an eye opener
for Western listeners. I challenge an educated listener not to have these songs ringing in your ears
for monts after you first listen.

Music is the drug of the modern masses. Play on and lets get
high on the rhythm!

Summary: review from vivi
Comment: This album continually reminds me of summer days.... hot tarmac under foot and bare footed old men
playing the guitar in Cuba..... This is an album that will never stop bringing a smile to my face,
it can make you dance or relax but either way you will always feel the heat radiate from this fine
collection of beautifully played music. The talent is over-whelming. a must have for everybody with
any musical interest whether you like rock, r and b, blues, folk to panpipes.

Summary: Superb
Comment: This is absolutely fantastic, if you do not own this album- own it now! From the very start you will
be amazed and totally intoxicated by the music- its performed with so much passion it will leave you
gobsmacked. "Candela" is bloody brilliant, in fact every song is fantastic. Its the kind of album
you can listen to to suit all your moods and situations, whether it be relaxing on a sunday
afternoon or before goin out partying on a friday night. So in short its superb! (There are not
enough superlatives to review this gem of an album.)

Summary: Why not 5*? SeƱor Cooder, that's why.
Comment: This album is wonderful. The Cuban musicians, Gonzalez, Portuando, Compay, Segundo y todos are [or
sadly, were, in some cases] wonderful performers and the songs are glorious. In fact, I was so
struck [in the film version] by the vivacity of the grizzled latino ravers that I have decided to
take up smoking cigars when[if] I get to 60!

However, Ry Cooder's unfortunate decision
to include himself, playing his Fender Strat slide guitar, is a serious flaw. The first track, the
BVSC signature tune "Chan Chan" is transformed from mellow and loping into something a bit menacing
when Cooder enters with that sinister slide up the fretboard. When I hear it, it sets my teeth on
edge, like fingernails scraped down a blackboard.

For all the undoubted merit that is
due to Cooder for bringing us this music, I am surprised his great muscianship failed him in this
respect. Electric slide guitar has no place in this music and it is very regrettable that he did not
stay in the control room and backstage and let the Cuban maestros have the stage to themselves, as
they most certainly deserve.

Summary: Rancho relaxo
Comment: There can't be many albums that relax like Buena Vista. Sit back and sip your mohito and think of
long sandy beaches along the Cuban coast. If you haven't been, then this will have you packing your
bags.
