Summary: Toyah's Hits - A Good Buy for Unfamiliars
Comment: I bought this album recently as I have always liked Toyah's song, 'It's a mystery' and I was lucky enough to see her perform a live set at a local nigtclub a few weeks ago, including 'It's a mystery', 'I want to be free' and 'Thunder in the mountains', all of which are on this album. After seeing her live and hearing this album I have discovered that Toyah is vastly under rated, and sings extremely well! My favourite track is definitely 'I want to be free', penned whilst still at school and is a classic new wave/punk anthem of the eighties along with 'It's a mystery'. This is a must have for any fan of eighties/ new wave music, you will be pleasantly surprised!

Summary: Great Collection
Comment: So many great Toyah tracks spanning so many albums. This compilation pulls together some brilliant tracks including some that were hard to find at the height of the Toyah explosion in the early 80's. Sphinx was originally released on a green flexi disc record packaged with a magazine. Similarly, Stand Proud came as a black flexi disc with Four More From Toyah (Good Morning Universe). Great to have Neon Womb and Danced included (still two favourites featured when Toyah tours and worth buying the album for these two tracks alone).
Angels & Demons is just great, atmospheric, eerie, at times brings out the tingle in the spine.

Toyah normal - no, Toyah will never be normal, always a great person with a mystery to her persona. Love the brilliant new red hair style (May 2004). Check oput pictures from the 80's and more recent images at www.toyahwillcox.com

Summary: Retro Rock
Comment: I cannot really remember Toyah at her peak, being just a toddler at the time, but my interest was sparked when seeing someone impersonate her by singing "Its a Mystery" on Stars in Their Eyes a few years ago. This led me to buy this album, and what a discovery it was.

The music is powerful, angst ridden and the lyrics are so intelligent. Its the type of stuff you just don't find being made any more. "Its a Mystery" is probably what she is best known for, and along with "I want to be free" is the flagship on the album. But my personal favourite is "Neon Womb" which is wound around saxophone accompaniments and the tempo builds and builds and builds.

"Brave New World", "Ieya" and "Thunder in the Mountains" impact on first listen, and "Angels and Demons" has great lyrics and an infectious chorus. All in all its enough to make make wish I was a teenager in 1980.

Such a shame she's so "normal" now!

Comment: Now I thought that my interest in Toyah stemmed from my adolescence and that I would have outgrown the sound. I have not heard her music for years and listened to this album with anticipation. And yes she is excellent - a true rocker with a sassy voice and a unique lyrical gift. "Its a Mystery" and "Thunder in the Mountains" remain classics. "Brave New World" is about as innovative as it got those days. Time for a re-release or a sampling. She's up there with Bowie in my opinion. You will really enjoy this. Toyah can look back with pride.

Summary: Great songs + great memories
Comment: I was worried when I bought this. So much early 80's synth music sounds crude and simplistic to 'new millenium' ears. However it all brought a smile to my face - not just the tunes, but also the memories.

While Toyah's image may have dated, the music still sounds surprising fresh. This CD covers the first 5 (?) albums from 'Sheep Farming ...' to Rebel Run. All (?) the singles are there along with the best extracts from the LPs (as we called them then).

I was a big fan at the time (1979-83) and I've decided I am still am !
