Editorial Reviews:
What is there left to say about this musical, deservedly one of the most famous in the canon? Created by what lyricist Stephen Sondheim described as "a unique concatenation of people" (Leonard Bernstein, Sondheim, Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins), the show remains as explosively vibrant, daring, and modern as it was decades ago. Bernstein integrated Latin percussion and jazz into his electrifying score, dazzlingly translating New York's unique vitality into a musical idiom.
West Side Story
has been adapted for jazz and interpreted by pop and opera singers, but you owe it to yourself to check out the original version to see what the fuss was all about. This new reissue adds over 20 minutes of "symphonic dances" as well as liner notes and production photos.

Summary:
ONE OF THE BEST MUSICAL MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS OF ALL TIME...
Comment:
Bernstein wrote himself into the annals of musical history with the score which he composed for West Side Story, a nineteen fifties version of Romeo and Juliet, and Stephen Sondheim did it justice with the terrific lyrics he wrote which made the music soar even higher. This a musical which has entered the popular consciousness with good reason. Who hasn't heard the beauty and poetry of "Maria", the expectant poignancy of "Tonight", or the eternally hopeful "Somewhere" and not been touched, especially when sung, as they are here, by Jim Bryant and Marnie Nixon? There is also the upbeat "America" and "I Feel Pretty" which are ensemble songs geared to showcase Jerome Robbins' choreography to perfection. This is a magnificent CD which should be a part of any collection, as it contains music that would make angels weep.

Comment:
Leaving aside the spectacular Bernstein score, the energy level (it leaps out at you) and the singing make this a truly wonderful recording. Chita Rivera powers through 'America' and Larry Kert and Carol Lawrence have beautiful and beautifully matched voices. Larry Kert's 'Maria' and 'Something's Coming' are two of the biggest highlights of this recording. One of the best Original Broadway Cast recordings ever.
