Editorial Reviews: The movie is a 1970s take on 1950s musicals, providing all the kitsch anyone could hope for. It's John Travolta as Danny Zuko as Olivia Newton-John's pompadoured main squeeze, and the kids go crazy. Fresh from his astronomical success with Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Bee Gee Barry Gibb penned the title track (sung by Frankie Valli). Sha Na Na is over-represented, and actress Stockard Channing struts her, um, versatility, singing a couple of tracks. This has become a touchstone in American culture, and so isn't likely to improve its standing in the world's eyes. Maybe the point is that it's supposed to sound amateurish, but it does manage to eke out some fun, most notably on the hit "You're the One That I Want". --Scott Wilson

Summary: As Glib A Summing-up of Teenage Life As I Have Ever Encountered
Comment: On the one hand, I am strangely drawn to the carefree and rather shallow exuberance of 'Grease', and it's songs, but on the other, I find it completely repellent.

Because 'Grease' and it's accompanying soundtrack fail to chart the lows that a person's teenage years can provide. Somewhat accurately, it charts the lust and the obsession with sex that tends to characterise most teenage behaviour, but this film has nothing for the misfits and the individuals who have never been a part of the popular crowd.

In essence, 'Grease' and it's accompanying soundtrack are a blatant nod to conformity, and the message is simple: conform, be part of a gang, be sex-obsessed, be shallow.

For example, there is the unbearable 'Summer Nights', a ridiculous summing-up of a wafer-thin, rootless teenage romance that is based entirely on lust, and the submissive behaviour of a rather dim-witted teenage girl. 'Hopelessly Devoted To You', meanwhile, is one of the most cringe-inducing songs I have ever heard, the simpering and idiotic ramblings of a teenage girl who is pining over a teenage oik who only wants into her knickers anyway.

Then there is the sneering and spiteful 'Look at me I'm Sandra Dee', in which several of the callous teenage witches mock the character of Sandy for being a virgin, straight-laced non-smoker. Which sends out a terrible message; that female purity is to be villified and sneered at.

Many of the other messages that 'Grease' sends out to young people are vile: to begin with, when Sandy ends up at the same school as the character of Danny, he pretends not to care about Sandy because she doesn't fit the normal mould for what he would be involved with, (i.e. a used-up boot). This all changes at the end of the film when Sandy changes her pure image and dresses up like a third-rate Leith Docks hooker. Suddenly Danny is overcome with lust and begins sniffing around his potential conquest like a dog in heat. Again, the message to women is clear: dress like a whore and get the guy. Repulsive.

This film constitutes harmless escapism for most people, but look beneath the glossy surface and there are some truly damaging messages to be found, messages which aim to make people as harmless, inoffensive and unthreatening as possible.

Summary: Always cheers me up
Comment: This is just one of the ultimate feel good albums, full of songs to sing along to in the car on a sunny day with the windows down, or in a pub garden, or simply in the living room when doing housework. My personal favourites are Beauty School Dropout and the very under-rated, but very funny Raining on Prom Night.

Summary: A 70s Soundtrack From A 50s Movie!!
Comment: If "Grease" was meant to be a movie based in the 50s, why are there very little traditional rock'n'roll style tracks on this album? Ah, who care ?!! This soundtrack is simply a joy to listen to. Take away the fact most of the songs are cheesey and corny, what you have is an album that makes you feel good.

Some tracks are more well-known than others, but is there anyone living in the Western world that doesn't know the words to these songs? And even if you don't, how many of you have added your own words and ju sung along to the tracks anyway?!

The highlights? Frankie Valli's "Grease" captures the 70s 'disco' sound perfectly, so it won't come as a surprise to discover this was written by one of the Bee-Gees. "Summer Nights, "You're The One That I Want", "Greased Lightning", "Hoplessly Devoted To You" and "Sandy" are all as popular today as they were 23 years ago.

But there are a few hidden gems to be found as album fillers, most noteably the contributions from the 'real' 1960s group 'Sha-Na-Na'. Tracks including: "Born To Hand Jive", "Tears On My Pillow", "Those Magic Changes" and "Blue Moon" prove it's unfair to associate the "Grease" soundtrack CD only with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. Also, Stockard Channing's "There Are Worse Things I Could Do" also deserves a mention too.

Any naff songs? Yeah, but just a few. "Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee" reeks of 'naffness'(!), but on this soundtrack CD, the good outweigh the bad.

I first bought this soundtrack in the early 80s on vinyl (remember lp's?) and twice on audio cassette years later. Now I have two "Grease" CD's (inc. the 20th Anniversary Edition with CD-Rom). Now, if that isn't a recommendation you buy it, I don't know what is!

Just avoid anything associated with "Grease 2"!!!!

Jon:)

Comment: Everyone should have a copy of this CS - if you loved the film, you'll lover the soundtrack. Takes you back to the fun fifties with lots of energetic music. My absolute favourite is Born to Hand Jive which makes me want to dance wherever I am, a real fun, boppy, inspirational number. This is classic nightclub 'mad half hour' music.
