Editorial Reviews: Bing Crosby was a laidback swinger, and this four-CD box spends a fair amount of its time reminding us of an era when the emphasis was as much on the swing as on the lazy-lidded attitude. Never as angst-ridden as Sinatra could be, and consequently not as multilayered, Crosby is nonetheless not a singer to be missed. The quarter century surveyed here includes cultural touchstones ("White Christmas," "Don't Fence Me In") and obscurities. All deserve to be heard by fans of the American song book and stylish performances. --Rickey Wright

Comment: Although unaccountably forgotten in recent years, Bing Crosby was the most influential and popular singer of the mid-20th century. Luckily this box set reminds us of his greatness by offering a solid overview of his most prolific years. Crosby recorded songs in almost every musical style, and this box includes many diverse offerings, from Irish tunes (Macnamara's Band), to Cowboy tunes (I'm an old Cowhand), to the great pop ballads for which Crosby was famous. Most of his big hits are included, as well as some previously unreleased rarities. (There's a particularly revealing recording of "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams," where Crosby improvises the forgotten words to hilarious effect.) Unfortunately this set includes only a handful of the many recordings that Crosby made for Decca records, and no recordings that he made for other labels. It is but a taste of the talents, humour and song-book of the man who once dominated popular entertainment. More Reviews
